Because barefooting is extremely sensual (all those bazillion nerve endings) and because we know that everybody else would feel the same way (assuming normal feet), we feel that barefooting is extending sensuality into the public sphere rather than keeping it private. It’s a tricky maneuver psychologically. Then there’s the exposure of a body part (feet) that is usually somehow covered (flip-flops or sandals). Some people live to differ! Some beg to differ. Who are YOU?
