After reading several posts from the younger people on here, and remembering times during those early teenage years, I'm really understanding the idea that youth is wasted on the young.

here I am, 33 years old, anything bad could happen to me, I have no "I'm too young to have a heart attack" thing going on. It's not considered acceptable to drink every single night at my age, nor to have a bullshit job that goes nowhere, I'm supposed to maybe have some kids. God knows LSD is out of the question.

What can be done to pound some sense into these younger posters? I would beat them, but then they would just get more depressed.

I don't want to drink every single night, or do LSD, thanks

youth has a certain amount of freedom, but it also has responsibility. The decisions we make now can affect our future immeasurably

Thats where youth is absolutely wrong, and should reconsider.

Why so aggressive, i didn't say you should drink every night, just giving examples.

You've pointed out exactly whats wrong with young people's mentatlity. They way overestimate the importance of say college. i wasn't that great of a student, i never let studying get in my way, and i still have a great job, great wife.

Wasting time over preparing for your future is the stupidest thing a person could do

I think university is important, I think that education is incredibly important. And no, education/learning doesn't stop once you leave school, but school is a great way to keep your focus on it for a while.

I'm not trying to be aggressive, I'm just letting you know where I stand. Maybe those were used as examples, but there's this huge assumption that people my age and younger do just waste their time drinking, doing drugs, fucking anything that's possibly human. It doesn't help that I look a bit younger than I am... you don't get any real respect as a person when you're young from a lot of people.

I'm also a little tired of people saying "oh you should be out doing blahblah" and "I can't believe you haven't tried substance Q"... it's just not who I am, I've never been taht party animal kind of person and people telling me how I should behave just because of my age (and nothing to do with my personality) just makes me very tired sometimes

I wasn't really talking about you, but to be frank, you are seeming a bit rigid right now.

I'm just looking back on all these people who were so dead serious on becoming, say, an accountant, making it seem so hard to get into etc. It's simply not that hard, the simple fact is that one should always smell the roses. Anyone can be dead at anytime, and nothing would be sadder than a person who never has any fun because they are constantly preparing for something, and then they die without ever doing it anyway

I would beat people that are too serious, but then they would just get more serious.

    so
    wasn't directed at me?

Each person is entitled to their own path. So mine's a bit quieter, less party/drug/booze filled than others, more scholastic than others. I'm allowed to make that choice with my life, I shouldn't be judged based on that, nor should I be judged just because I've been on the planet for 20 years instead of 30. Good for you for doing your own thing, it's awesome that you have a great job and wife... we may just have different methods to get to our goals is all.

OK, your a rigid person, If you are happy with that, go with it.

I just don't think you are happy with that, because you are acting way too defensive about it. Do whatever you want, I'm just making genral comments here.

i like to have fun...and having fun can be anything is chilling with friends to drinking to playing pool to getting stoned...

i'm still young, i don't want major responsibilities right now - i'd rather just kick back and relax. but i know that education is important, so i balance the two...last year i didn't, i partied pretty much every day - but i don't regret any of it...i had fun. now i am more serious than last year, but i still have my nights of binge drinking and getting stoned outta my mind.

i'm not gonna be able to do this much longer, so why not enjoy it while it lasts....i don't think i've wasted my youth. my jobs have always been fun - aquarium, and sports camp. theres time to be serious about the future and then theres time to just kick back and chillout...

    Forget who said it but,

"Worrying about something that may or may not happen is like paying interest on money you might not borrow"

I agree with most everything you say Gary. There's a lot of 'ageism' in this world. People get too far caught up in what they 'should' be doing instead of doing what they want to do.

In saying that, I'm definitely a career minded person. I work my ass off and demonstrate a commitment towards my job that most people would say is boarderline obsessive.

I do however, know that everyone needs to blow off some steam and dedicate time doing the things they enjoy.

I certainly work very hard in terms of my career responsibilities, but when I have the opportunity to bow out and enjoy myself, I endulge greatly

I'm the same Ryan. i take my job seriously...but what gives me an edge is that I look at that as fun even. Someone says "you are doing a great job on this project," I say, thanks, I'm having a great time doing it...throws people off.

I love indulging. I doubt I'll ever stop blowing off steam, the most successful person I know is my cousin, and he blows off steam at unbelievable levels..

I have some regrets from my past, but they generally involve risking losing my life, or not treating certain people as well as I should of.

I have no regrets about having great times with all of the friends I've made along the way, and I don't wish I had done better in school or anything like that. I would regret if I had made no friends.

I think that school is overhyped to young people to get them to keep at it. No one really asks what your grade point was once you are done....if you are a capable person, you are a capable person.

yea i am...i like who i am now, however, i'm not naive in thinking that i won't change. i could change tomorrow for all i know...i try to live for the present-to-near future.

shit, i'm an economics major - 3 years into it...i'm having doubts on if i want to stick with it or change majors....i dunno, i can't think that far into the future, so i don't....and i like who i am now...i do a decent amount of partying, mixed with my school work...

military college drains the life outta you sometimes, with all the responsibility and acting like your bigger than who you really are - i just have to release myself, and its going out partying and having fun with my friends....

Couldn't agree more Gary, feel the very same way about my life

I even got the raging successful cousin living in London to prove it

Your comment points out something about school. You don't have to do exactly what you study. You can bend your degree and experience in many different ways. A person is evolving, and not stuck into the pigeon-hole that school places you in.

Its very common to end up doing many different things in your life.

i remember worrying about the same kind of thing in school, but looking back its just not that big of a deal, unless you want to be a doctor, which would be a nightmare for me.

i know i can bend my degree, but an economics degree can only go so far when i'm thinking of becoming a phys. ed teacher or working in sports therapy or in fields such as that...

its just that i'm questioning myself in that i'm asking will i truly be living the life i want if i go this route with an econ degree...i know i can always go back to school, which i've gone over, and is a high probable case for me....just things i've been thinking about this year...but i dont' worry about it, just too much stress to worry about it...i rather have fun with my friends than worry about future job prospects....

I wish I realized that when I first went to college. I actually dropped out after a year because I was so stressed and believed that what I studied was imperative to the course my life would take. When I went back, I still stressed about it and paid far too much attention to the content of the courses as opposed to what I think college really is about. the degree/content of your study really doesn't matter much at all. I think the true benefit of college if taken in the right light is to become a better communicator and problem solver.

Outside of certain specialized degrees, such as being a doctor, an engineer etc, I certainly believe this to be true

That's true for the classroom and it extends beyond the classroom too.

For some of us the bigger issues occured outside of the classrom as in 'how do I pay rent'. Well perhaps I should grow some pot and sell it, but how am I going to communicate that to my parents if I get busted.

college is all about problem solving and communication

You've got it nailed Fitzy. Motivational stress is good, worry is a waste. The world could literally end tomorrow.

thats true Ryan, learning to communicate and deal with others seems a crucial part of schooling. Sure we need to know the basics, but ultimately that time spendt bullshitting with others and drinking beer with groups of people could be more useful than anything else. As sad as it may sound, a likeable person will go farther in life, because no one wants to be around a pain inthe ass.

Problem solving is key too, just like you said.

Doesn't that mean "jerk me off?"

Anyway, you don't need to be beaten, you seem pretty damn happy most of the time.
