I've had that plenty, when one person in a group I've just met (A group that likely formed because none of them had the balls to ask about my hair alone) asks if I wash it and another trips over themselves in their eagerness to show that they know that I don't. I would suggest telling them that maybe if they washed their hair more, they would have locs too, and then explain the whole "clean=knots" thing.
Today I was in the library getting shit together for a presenatation and I ran into a friend I havent seen in awhile. And she saw my hair and started touching it, and said I should palm roll it. And I said i'm doing neglect dreads because I want the mature locks to be more on the wilder side and not as uniformed and she said that I should love my hair not neglect it.
today some friends from uni started to give me some "advice" and asking questions, I got upset and told them I didn't wanna talk about it anymore, if they didn't get it the first time I explained it then go ask someone else. I souldn't have said that, but it is annoying to be answering the same questions to the same people almost every day, they just don't get it.
I hate when people always say the same stereotypes as well. People don't understand the beauty in dreadlocks and the patience and determination they require, plus all the hard work put into maintenance! And I also read that dreadlocks are actually considered really healthy hair too, so people need to put the internet to good use and do some research
:daisy: When people are wrong about them I correct them but it gets to the point where you just don't bother anymore because you've already repeated yourself numerous times. And my hair doesn't even really look like dreads yet and I already get this.
That's why 'neglect' isn't really the best term to use as it brings to mind being dirty and uncared for, which isn't normally the case as they get washed still. I prefer the term 'natural', it sounds sweeter too haha
At work I sometimes get "You'll be bringing in spliffs next" or people making rasta jokes. I quickly dowse them by saying "I bet HR would like to hear about those comments" or "That sounds like negative stereotyping to me"
I guess Im lucky. Ive never been bothered by people. My fam made it clear to me that they dont like dreads in the beginning...but left it at that....which is cool. My friends are all crazy hippies or just cool people who could care less about my hair so they never give me shit. Strangers who have approached me do so to compliment...
