Lmfao awe man I just visualized you standing at a supermarket with beautiful long mature OLD dreads and running into this person who told you this cracking eggs on their head in isle 6 trying to get dreads all confused why it's not working --and your just slowly shaking your head at him/her.

I've noticed that even when you are presented with accurate information... you don't seem to pay much attention to it.

    How do you figure..
At first I was backcombing. (which isn't so bad considering I have straight/wavy hair) then I realised the kind of dreads I wanted needed to be neglected so now I do nothing.

Except palm roll occasionally, sleeping with a wool sweater on my pillow, and a seasalt/water spray.

    No wax just love.
You have to actually give me a chance to learn and go the right way.
It's easy to critisize those just beginning to grow dreads when you already have gorgeous locks.

I'm not one of those... how-do-I-have-great-locks-right-now types. I want to wait. The entire process of growing locks is beautiful.

palm rolling and spraying does not sound like neglect/'doing nothing' to me

I have to give you a chance? You have to give your hair a chance. If you don't have the time or patience to wait for your hair to lock on its own, there's nothing I can do about it. Have you taken a look through the FAQ?

    I don't believe you

    That would be funnier

If not, try just explain to them what your reasoning behind what you're doing is and how you want to go about it. It get's frustrating having to repeat it over and over, but I guess that's all part of being patient.
    It'll stop in time

I only backcombed my hair that much because my hair is short and it wouldn't take...and I was lazy about doing it properly
I don't backcomb anymore because today as I was backcombing I realised nothing was really changing. I had to learn for myself.
I do take advice on this forum.
Like the wool sweater on the pillow, and the saltwater spray.
Which btw you have the ocean to your advantage... I don't.

Also I have to admit I've been pretty confused with all the different information i've been receiving as to what different people consider neglect.

But the little things I have been doing beats the hell out of going to a loctician getting my hair twisted and waxing the crap out of it. I have to learn somehow.

I don't know why you don't believe me at this point I don't really care anymore. I think it's incredibly unrealistic for you to base your opinions on something so simple like that. I do consider it a beautiful process and I want to wait. If I wanted instant crap dreads id wax them. But despite idiots trying to get me to wax my hair constantly or saying "work on them" I didn't wax them.

You may think i'm not listening, but I'am. Even to you...even tho it seems like it's constant criticism. Ultimately I know you have gorgeous dreadlocks and i'm taking your advice. But a seasalt and water spray..??

    :iagree:

Washing with baking soda is a lot simpler and full of salt. The whole point of my posts is that I see you talking about locks being a beautiful process, I'm just going to e patient, blah blah blah. If that's the way you feel, it seems silly that you think you need to help your hair do what it will do naturally if you keep it clean and give it enough time. That is the essence of neglect (in case you are wondering), to ignore your hair and just do what you do. You don't need saltwater sprays, or the ocean... Spending time in and out of a river or pond on a hot day is great for knots.

It is a less extreme version of a similar mindset.

good :2thumbsup: it's just teh interwebz... have you seen my screen name? :biggrinjester:

Thank you. I guess I just needed someone to point out that it will get there if I do nothing that plain and simple. I will wash with baking soda, but really tho the sea salt spray I made myself its literally just sea salt and water in a spray thingy. Nothing is simpler then that. Anyways I appreciate your criticism lol :) If my dreads turn out half as nice as yours in years to come i'll be a very happy woman.

Why are you asking me... the choice is yours. I thought I just laid out the options. The only thing you MUST do, if only for your hair's sake, is to throw away the flea comb and never bring one near your head again.

I used to get a lot of "you need to palm roll" or "use more wax".

I only get compliments now, though.

exact same thing happened to me lol and it was my BEST friend who said i didnt wash my hair and she KNOWS i do but she said "well you dont like ACTUALLY wash it do you.." and i didnt know what to make of that.

i just try not to get annoyed by people either giving unwanted/ill informed advice, asking stupid questions, making silly comments... cos theyre not trying to be annoying they just dont know about dreadlocks. i just take the opportunity to get rid of some of the common misconceptions and stereotypes.

dumb as fuck comments come with the hairstyle.
