I just thought I would throw this out to any of you that had the oppertunity to see a grateful dead concert. I only was able to get to 3 shows, all in chicago. What is the best grateful dead concert you saw and/or what is your favorite memory from a grateful dead concert. I saw one in the early 90's at the new world theater, now the tweeter center I think. We were chillin on the grass enjoying the music and people when this old scraggely looking hippie came up to us and just started a conversation. He had a hard plastic top hat that when he began rappin with us he used as a seat. He pulled out a bowl and shared it with us as he told us of concerts past. He had been following the dead for over 20 years. It was just the coolest thing. After about 30 minutes he packed up and moved on and found another group of people to get to know and share his kind bud with. I will never forget that deadhead.

One of my most memorable shows was in Alpine Valley in 88. I made a connection dancing with a beautiful hippie sister at her first show and just had a blast the entire time. The band played Blackbird at the end of the show. They coldn't quite get the words right and had a laugh about it.

And when was that? Even if it was twenty years ago it was well after what most of us consider to be their 'peak.'

What kind of music do you listen to?

acccctuuually, I know of a guy who had to swallow his evidence of three ten strips.
good old cop hand on the shoulder. Thank heavens he was almost out....
Luckily, this is a psychonaut and he was catatonic for three shows.
I met him the day after he woke up: Dallas 88.... we are married today....

Actually dropping a couple of ten strips wasn't really that uncommon amongst regular dead show goers. A friend and I split a sheet once just to see what would happen. It took us a week to get our shit together. I'm not talking crappy or weak acid either, but the standard 100 microgram, triple separated hits.

BTW drumminmama, I was there in Dallas in 88 also.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I was security. first day on the job, no official uniform yet. (as I rarely wear trousers, they had to order a skirt for me)

remember a dude swinging doses with a purple leather Robin Hood hat?

Seems like I may remember the guy with the purple Robin Hood hat, but I was pretty looped for most of 88. I do remember the Dallas show because of an interesting run in with, ahem, security. I was dancing through the hallway during the second set and out of nowhere my dog runs up and starts jumping around so happy to see me. (So much for giving that sister a bud to watch my dog). Anyway a security guy starts yelling for me to get my dog outa there and we shove him out a side door and I start trying to convince security to let me out and back in so I could lock him in the van. During this discussion I notice a Dallas cop smiling at me and looking at my dog through the glass doors. The cop nods his head at me and opens the door letting my dog back in. The cop is just laughing as I dash into the crowd of spinners with fido at my heels. I had a blast dancing with man best friend that night.

you defintaly werent ragin it second row. I know some older dudes really well who used to tour with the dead like crazy in the 70's, im talking 100 shows a year. One of them told me he used sell 600 mic windowpane, he said they were so hard they would shatter if you tryed to break up a hit so you would have to eat the whole thing, from what I here people were flipping out constantly.

No i wasn't "ragin it second row", I tended to hang in the hallways with the spinners. Good thing you know some guys who toured like crazy in the 70's so you're hip to the scene and you can tell me what's what with all that LSD and Dead shows.

I really couldn't pick a favorite entire show. Moment probably was the either the Eyes from 10/17/94 - 25 minutes of pure bliss and longest version in twenty years. That or the Morning Dew from 3/18/90 hands down the best of the Brent era.
