my period, after taking a long break (around 10 months) has returned, and i'm on my second period since it decided to finally make an appearance. i'm telling myself this is a good thing- and i know it is. i'm a bit worried, though, because it's still not normal. it's shorter than it should be (2 days, maybe) and it doesn't look like it should. sorry if this is TMI, but it's just very small quantities of brown goop. should it be normal even having been gone for so long, or could it take a couple of cycles to get back to normal-ish? or should i be worried because it's not normal?

brown just means that it's old blood. Two days is within the range of normal for duration. Are you on hormonal birth control? I ask because what you are describing is exactly what I experienced when I was on the pill. For some reason or another, you are not ovulating, and the lining of your uterus is not growing and shedding like it should. Ten months is too long to go without menstruating, unless you are very athletic, or on hormonal birth control, or pregnant or breastfeeding. Have you talked to your doctor about this? If s/he is not concerned, I'd go find a different doctor. I would want to have some blood drawn to find out your hormone levels and rule out any problems like PCOS, which could cause you much distress and heartbreak later in life if you ever decide to have babies. My best friend has PCOS, and when she was your age, doctors just blew it off and told her she was a late bloomer (not true).

    polycystic ovaries

here are some links, I do not know how good the information is, or if these sites are just bought and paid for by the companies that make medications to treat the disorder (happens more often than not, why you should always take info from the net with a grain of salt)

Are you at all overweight, or have your doctors ever told you you were at risk for diabetes? Have your periods always been irregular, or is it just this year?

I have PCOS, and these are two big warning signs of it, along with missing/having irregular periods. If it's an option, GO TO THE DOCTOR and request a complete physical. Explain your concerns - this and anything else that might be bothering you (you'd be surprised at the range of symptoms associated with these problems) As part of the physical, they will draw your blood to determine if you are insulin resistant (a big clue leading toward PCOS)
The links Mamaboogie put up are good info sites, you can also get some good info by googling "pcos". And please feel free to PM me if you have any more questions or want some support.

my periods have always been irregular (it's not at all unusual for me to go a couple of months without a period), though my mom's and grandmother's were as well until they had a couple of kids. i'm not on any sort of birth control, but i am a runner. i'm pretty sure my high running mileage was to blame for the 10 months of amenorrhea, but my periods started being a bit strange even before they went on vacation. i'm not running anywhere near the mileage i was before (laziness + school&work) so i'm sure that's not causing me problems. my periods are happening...but i haven't had a normal, non- brown and incredibly short period in at least a year if not more. i'm not at all overweight either (5"4', 115-ish)
mamaboogie, i looked at those links, and did find some helpful info. i really should make a doctor's appt someday i guess....haven't been to the doctor in quite some time because i hate going.....
