My five-year-old decided last night that she wants to be a vegetarian! I'm so excited. She decided on her own (I think because her teacher is and she LOVES her teacher) without any persuading on my part.
I have to talk to her school today about special diet lunches.
Hopefully she'll stick with it, but I'm not going to give her a hard time if she slips up. I think it has to be her decision.....but, for now, I'm REALLY excited!!!!!

    :D

She will never get the proper amount of protein that a growing 5 yearold needs. Please reconsider her wishes. When she is old enough to make an informed decision then so be it. But in the mean time, take responsibility to raise a healthy child. Thank you for listening.

... why would it be more unhealthy for a child than an adult? adults have proven they dont need to eat dead animals to survive, so why should it be required that children eat them? it isnt needed, as they will get sufficient amounts of protein from alternative sources.

her decision might be based on something flimsy, but, a young growing child can live a very healthy life on a vegetarian diet.

This quote demonstrates a remarkable lack of understanding of vegetarianism. It is a statement where the belief held is that it is harmful to not eat meat. Like smoking... tolerated self-induced harm. First, there is no comment about this girl going vegan -- and even if she was it would still be possible to ensure enough protein, although a little harder.

I would love for you to back up your statements. On top of that, please show a report where the basic minumim amount of meat required during childhood is listed. How much is just enough? 10 pounds a year? 2 lbs? I mean, you must know these things.

What is the dimishing rate of return from tofu and its related protein absorbsion in a growing child.

    Please back your BS up with data and not heresay. Thank you for listening. {you troll}

You people are fucked if you think a five year old would have the discipline and knowledge to eat the correct foods that a young developing body needs with meat not being an alternative. You are putting a child at risk. Grow up and look at the big picture. The kid isn't old enough to make an informed decision and, therefore, important decisions as such need to be the parents responsibility. *Piss me off!*

no yeah, bug_man is right - five year olds don't normally have the nutrional know how to get the right food. But luckily, I don't know of that many 5 year olds who prepare their own meals, so that's really not an issue. Her mother on the other hand, can be informed and she can feed her child nutritional, vego food without hassle.

Indeed, she can get all the protien, iron and other vitamins and minerals she needs without the cholesterol and hormones that are part of meat through a vegie diet and without forcing her child to eat a corpse.

Wow.....wasn't trying to start such an uproar.
And~I AM a resposible mother. How can you judge me as a poor mother for letting my child not eat carcass? Are you telling me I should make her eat meat against her wishes?????? That's crazy! Are you a vegetarian? If so, would you like someone to force you to eat meat against your wishes? Like others have said, she is capable of getting necessary protein from other sources.

ANYWAY..................She seems to be very serious about this. I've been discussing it with her all day and she says that her main reason is because she doesn't like the meat they serve at her school, but the policy is that the kids have to eat all of their lunch (which is a whole other argument). I spoke with her teacher today and they have no problem with her being veg (unlike someone around here!) and said they have several veg kids in the school. I will just start packing her beans and/or nuts to take with her for her protein.....which she loves, by the way.

Now, if only the rest of the family would stop eating meat.....hmmmmm:cool:

    ~Peace~

that's wondeful, really sweet! Good luck to you and your daughter! Maybe if you really seriously want the rest of your family to consider it, try making some of the things they really like but veggie friendly for meals that you all share. Like for instance try making a chilli with a few different kinds of beans instead of meat, or something along those lines.

To whoever didn't think that kids can get all the nutrition they need without meat, you are sadly misinformed my friend. I know quite a few women who are raising thier children vegitarian. One of them is a fellow teacher at the pre-school I work at, who is very informed, and makes very sure that her son gets all the protien he needs. In fact, he is one of the most well developed and expressive 2 year olds at the school. Just because something isn't what you're used to, doesn't mean it's not efective or safe.

A 5 year old also lacks the knowlege and conviction to butcher a cow.

I'm so happy for you and your daughter, I think it's great that she can choose this at such a young age- do you plan on teaching her later (in a few years, say) what goes on in the meat industry/your beliefs on eating meat. What are your beliefs on eating meat?

Awww yay that is so wonderful, children are so compassionate by nature.

Found this link, hope it helps vegetarianbaby.com (not just for babies, kids are also covered)

She might be a bit young for it but vegkids.com is a nice site for children into animal rights (it's part of PETA's site)
Good luck to you all :)

You people are fucked if you think a five year old would have the discipline and knowledge to eat the correct foods that a young developing body needs with meat not being an alternative.
since when does a child of that age eat the correct foods anyway, even if they do eat meat? the parents make the decisions for what they eat usually. if it was up to even a meat eating child, theyd most likely go for candy and shit. And, theyd probably go for hamburgers and french fries too. Oh yeah, hamburgers are really healthy.

You are putting a child at risk.
Have you raised a vegetarian child? Have you witnessed the raising of a vegetarian child? Until you do, don't say that anyones putting a child at risk by allowing them to not eat dead animals.

Grow up and look at the big picture. The kid isn't old enough to make an informed decision
No kid really is. But it isnt like this is a bad decision either, youre just opposed to vegetarians for some reason, and you're trying to find an excuse to tear us limb from limb.

and, therefore, important decisions as such need to be the parents responsibility.
The parents are making the important decision, agreeing with the child. and will provide nutritious food just as a meat eating parent would. Minus the dead tortured animals pumped full of hormones and antibitotics.

Scientific research has proven that the vegetarian AND vegan diets are fine for every age and stage of life.
