Woman arrested on child cruelty charge
    by Jeff Gable

An Alabama woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say she injured a child while dragging it through a store in Rome.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Melissa Catherine Smith-Means, 37, of Gaylesville, Ala., was arrested by Rome police around 12:30 p.m. She was charged with felony first-degree cruelty to children.

Police say she was observed by customers and employees at a store on Broad Street, dragging a small child around by a backpack leash. The child had visible marks on the neck from the incident.

She remains in jail without bail.

    wow.

    1. I'd probably bet the kid was refusing to move, and the mom got impatient, and didn't know how to actually parent her child (probably needs classes)

    2. if she can't control her child, she should carry him, not drag him.

    3. if she can't carry him, and can't control him, she should ( I am assuming here, I don't mean to say she was absolutely doing it) pay her damn verizon bill online.

I see a parent with a kid who is screaming and being a holy terror, I can understand that, I see a parent carrying their kid, who is screaming, and being a holy terror. I understand that

dragging your kid on a leash is insane.

I attempted to use one of those leash things once. We were going to the aquarium, it was a birthday present for Alexis because she LOVES fishies, and it was on clearance. I got her to the aquarium and put it on her, it looked SO uncomfortable! So, I took it off of her and carried her or she walked while holding my hand.

And, I think the woman should be dragged by a leash for punishment. Behind a high speed car.

EDIT: I decided to watch the video. WHY was a kid that big on a leash anyway?

I always advised parents to leave their child and wink at a store emplyee so they know you're not really leaving. It really cuts that crap out unless it's a child who processes differently or the parent is a monster and teh child would ratehr be parented by Verizon.

That's a weird video. It's abuse, but I don;t know if the mom should have her kids removed. Kid's are just so easily manipulaed and redirected, i have no idea why someone would resort to dragging their child.
I am torn on this. Not sure how I feel. I know teh anger I experienced when I was a behavioral therapist. I couldn;t imagine parenting some of the kids I worked with.

I don;t really agree with giving kids meds or daignosing them, unless it's apparently obvious they have a specific psychological disorder and it is extreme. I would most likely feel differently if I had a child with severe ADHD or the type of autsim (even though those aren;t psychological disorders...I can;t think of a psychological disorder I would want my kid medicated for unless their life was at risk) where they are always sensory sesitive (I like the sensory deprived kids with autism-I am a hugger).I have the falling thing again so I don;t know if what I am typing makes sense.

    Schizophrenia.

though it almost always presents during adolescence, and the formation of the prefrontal cortex, I'm going to suppose that some of those girls who go through puberty when they're five thanks to "placenta-in-a-bottle" hair conditioner, and all the hormones in all the products we subject people to these days could be schizophrenic in their early childhood years.

I would also suggest severe PTSD.

and one or two anxiety disorders

and I didn't mean for the kid :p

Ditto on the Schizophrenia. My uncle has it. It made my childhood really difficult since he is not able to live independently and lived with my grandparents for a few years.
I haven;t met a child under 12 with it, because like you said, the childhood cases are so rare. I did work with a girl who's dad had it and I started seeing signs. Justa total disconnect from age 12 to age 13. So sad Dave.

my sister's first boyfriend was schizo, he's medicated now, he's a nice guy for the most part (honestly? he's pretty level on and off his meds, just off his meds his relationship with reality is MUCH more tenuous) some schizophrenic people are terrifying, but some just need help.

    is he your nephew's father?
It's so painful to be around him sometimes.
My grandma was very sick with him and got a horrible flu. I've read some journal's that say Schizophrenia happens more often in April babies and linked flu viruses while pregnant to schizophrenia. Do you think that's possible?
