I have a purse that i made out of a deck or cards, its 100% cards and tape. i cant use it anymore because people stare/point/laugh.. like I usually dont care what people think, I mean I wouldnt have dreads and intersting clothing if I did, but this is just too much... relax kids, its a fucking purse! but everyone needs to stare and hate me for it....
Anyone else have this problem with homemade crafts/clothes?

I don't know if it'd work for you, but as long as I can remember I've had people stare at me because I dress and decorate myself in ways that make me happy, so I just think of it as 1) I must look damn good or 2) they're envious that I've got guts enough to do what makes me happy without caring what they think. Personally, I'd be thrilled if folks felt the need to point out one of my handmades to whomever they're talking with, go strut it hon, be proud like the peacocks are, you've earned the awe-struck gazes of bystanders.

some people take things way too seriously and hate creativity. It's really foolish. If you differ in any way they will stare, ask dumb questions, or make stupid jokes. But these people will always find something to stare at, so I say use the purse. It sounds fucking awesome. I used to wear about 80 or so jelly bracelets, and people would make fun of them and then ask for one. I stopped wearing them simply because they looked dingy and I wanted to free my arms for a while. Don't worry about these small-minded people. They're very boring and trust me, if card purses became the in thing, they'd all have one. Example: I used to wear a spongebob squarepants necklace, and people would make fun of it to no end (again, I stopped wearing this because the chain tarnished) But now that spongebob is more popular those same girls have spongebob backpacks and folders. Gag me with a spoon. Haha

I had purple hair once and the stares I got were insane! Im sure that is to be expected with purple hair....but it was like "c'mon, we live a big city! I know you have seen purple hair before!" I felt like there was a spotlight on me wherever I went. Eventually I got sick of being looked at all the time and I changed it back to my normal color. I know, I shouldnt have given to those idiots who felt the need to stare and make me feel uncomfortable....but I just couldnt take it anymore. You should definatley post a pic of the purse though. It sounds cool and I would love to see it.:)

exactly. At least your purse is unique, and it's made by you, which makes it cooler than any bag you buy in a store. Let people stare, as long as YOU like it, that's what counts. :)

well....yah. Isn't getting attention and being recognized as unique and individual one of the reasons for not cloning out and trying to make yourself look like a square. When you have a card purse you should expect people to stare. People stare at me in my shag coat and pink elvis shades that I wear at night. People stare at my thai fishermans pants and my hairy armpits. I don't mind one bit. I grin at them and keep going. If I did mind I spose I'd get me a pair of levis and a white t shirt. In the koots, or the coast you could walk around topless in a sombrero with a paper bag skirt and you'd scarcely get a second look. You can get away with alot in Van and Montreal too.

a bag made of cards!! that is so f*ckin original and cool - you should wear it every day.

I'm making a bag right now out of jeans i cut into shorts and i'm thinking of stealin your idea a bit if you don't mind, maybe i'll put a Joker card on the front or something.

one time when i complained about getting stares someone told me that it would be worse to be invisible and have no-one notice you - i had to agree.

"Don't let the bastards grind you down" :sunglasse

Why would people hate you for it? Thats insane, it's just a damn purse. Here, I think people seriously go out of their way not to notice things. Like on the first day of school this kid wore a brown vintage suit(which pissed me off to hell and back. I have such a hard time finding suits) and literally no one payed attention to him. Except for ballons... My friend is a clown, and she used to blow up ballons for some friends and stuff, just kidding around. Well, people kept asking for ballons and shit like it was her job. People would ask for all sorts of wild shit they knew she could'nt make, and some even offered to pay. People are fucking stupid.

Creativity is a beautiful thing. Each and every unique thought we come up with is just that, unique and beautiful. I love when people comment on my handmade wares that I sport, it gives me a sense of pride. I came up with that, and people noticed it. Be proud of your uniqueness, and creativity. I'd like to see a picture of the purse as well! ;)

you know, I had a similar experience (actually, I've had many, but that's irrelevant...) when a couple of my friends dyed my ex-dreads bright red. I thought it was the coolest thing on earth, and thanked those kids profusely for making me do it, but a number of my, ahem, "free-thinking" hippie friends gave me crap about it, saying it "wasn't natural," etc. It was pretty dumb, because, after all, the whole hippie movement was originally about "being one's self," from a Rousseauean perspective. (I know the guy's been dead for like 200 years, but he's worth reading--a lot of the 1960s concepts of authenticity, self-expression, and self-loyalty "originated" in his brain). But...then I ran into the problem of "normal" people assuming that, due to my red dreadlocks, I was a certain "type" of person, one definitely worth staring at (although I actually enjoy the attention, I dislike being typecast), so I cut off the dreadlocks. Now, I dress pretty "normally," (most of you would probably call me a "conformist" if you saw me, but boy would you be wrong *winks*) but I do it intentionally, for specific reasons, all of which are completely in line with my personal philosophy--as well as Rousseauean, "hippie" principles. I think that it serves my purposes more at this moment to be accepted by a more mainstream sector of the population (let me tell you, my excuses for being late to class are much better received when my hair is brushed and my clothes are neat and matching than when I had dreadlocks and ragged, mismatched clothes!) and I also don't feel the need to express my individuality through my clothing anymore. I'm comfortable in being my own person, without needing to prove my authenticity to the world.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you don't feel comfortable wearing (or carrying, in this case) a particular item, DON'T. If you're not comfortable, it isn't really you anyway, because the real you is a person who is comfortable with yourself and your actions, regardless of the reactions of those around you. People will always be shallow, and people will always stare at things that aren't ordinary. Trust me, I know. I'm 20 years old, I have a 17-month-old son, I'm happily married, I don't use drugs (anymore, but I have been in both mental hospitals and rehab, the latter of which I ran away from and hitchhiked across the country to the Rainbow Gathering, which I had never been to before, but that's a different story all together), and I have a 3.8 university GPA. I'm also incredibly happy. My entire life is a contradiction of stereotypes, and people never believe me when they see me, but I don't really care, because this is who I am. So wear your bag if it's you, and if it's not, display it prominently in your home, because it sounds like it's really cool. How did you make it? Did you glue the cards to a backing? I'm curious to see it.

And remember, even if people tell you that you're a conformist, or that you're just breaking down under negative pressure...just remember...if you're doing something for a reason that rings true to you, whatever that reason may be, then you're living in the true hippie/free spirit, because, in the end, YOUR reason is the one that matters.

    peace out,
    Alyce

sometimes i think that maybe they stare cause they're auctally jealous and envy you that you are able to stand out...and are sad they dont have the guts to be themselves

~*hey ~ as per most things that attract attention or energy my way, whether it be positive or negative i choose to respond with THANKS that others are investing their precious energy my way ~ it is what you make it baby! besides, nothing pisses the squares off more than when you respond with a great attitude to their negative vibes... who knows you might just be inspiring some kind soul to shine like you can! that sounds like a groovy bag i'd love to see a pic!*~
