Where was it? And why'd it suck?

Many winters ago, I reunited with my family to stay at a winter cabin in Sunriver, OR for a skiing and snowshoeing trip. Coincidentally my girlfriend lived in Bend, a town about 20-30 minutes away from our cabin. I was really looking forward to this vacation, because I love Sunriver and the snowboarding conditions out there; I was also very eager to introduce my girlfriend to my family for the first time. The cabin was amazing; outside my bedroom was a balcony with a hot tub, and my bathroom had a heated tile floor. I called my girlfriend to tell her we arrived at the cabin and I couldn't wait to see her. She couldn't go skiing with Us the first day so my family went without her. The main chair line malfunctioned and many of the slopes were inaccessible. The place was jam packed with people, and the snow condition was really hard and icy. I called my girlfriend and she said she was having second guesses on the relationship and didn't seem to want to come to the cabin. I drove to Bend to meet her, where she broke up with me right then and there on the spot. It was devastating for sure. I drove through Bend and Sunriver the other day, and those terrible memories came back and haunted me.

    Well that does suck.

I've never had a bad vacation. I've had some misadventures but never really minded them. I'm just usually so happy to be traveling and to put my regular life on hold that nothing could really bother me on vacation, maybe short of a break up..and even then, I'm on vacation. I would probably just go out and find some hot guys to flirt with.

Whole town smells like sweaty ass

Sorry east coasters, but that's a truly miserable part of the world

I took a vacation to South Beach once and the hotel was pretty gross. 2nd or 3rd day there, my travel partner got the flu and had a blazing fever. The place wasn't in a great neighborhood either, so I didn't feel great walking around alone. So I was sort of confined to a gross hotel....there were cats everywhere around the pool, too, and all you could smell was cat pee. I dunno, it wasn't the worst thing ever, but it certainly wasn't much fun for the money we paid.

SC beach trip when a tropical storm formed right off the coast, giving people very little evacuation time. Had to load the car in a mega-downpour and drive through terrible weather, wearing wet clothes, and hungry. Didn't get to do one fun thing on that trip.

Also, my sister once planned a trip for us to Jamaica. It had to be cheap because we were students with very little money, but she did a poor job of researching the place. There was little food available and the local people were scary. No hot guys around. The beach was marginal. I never again trusted her to plan a trip for me.

Was that your only trip to Jamaica, Karen? Really seems a hit or miss destination. It apparently can be mad fun (which is why I still wanna go there one time for sure)! But I'm sure to do some more research in location/accomodation before :-D

I guess my worst vacation was as a kid and I just was terribly bored and disappointed to the point I wish I wasn't there. It just didn't live up to my expectations. I did have worse incidents on later trips as well but happily they never ruined the vacation/trip.

Yeah, I've been to other islands in the Caribbean since then. If I ever go back to Jamaica, I'll hit several of the cultural and historical destinations. My travel priorities are so different now. Beach sand and warm water are not nearly enough. I can easily drive to that.

Best would be with a (sail) boat and take a lengthy trip visiting several caribbean islands!

When my husband lived in south Florida, before we were together, he had his own Cessna for exploring islands! Too bad I missed all that. His pics are spectacular.

I always worry about safety when it comes to vacationing. There is a ferry in Indonesia that is lost along with 80 passengers missing. They've pulled something like 40 people out of the water. I always worry that something like that will happen. Even just driving a long ways I worry the car will break down or even that I shouldn't be running the A/C because it will hurt the engine or something. I might forget to stop and fuel up on my way out to Vegas. Lol.

Our last trip to Mexico was horrible. It was hot, dirty, and we got sick. Never going back again. Our best vacations are Maui and Kauai.

my childhood? my entire childhood. i don't mean my parents were any kind of monsters. most kids my age had worse. some a lot worse.
but the happiest times in my life are the times i've been alone.
i can't say as i've ever understood vacations.
or you could say my entire life has been one in as far as i've always tried to avoid routine and repititious aspects of life.
well i liked days off from work or school. i've always believed that sanity depends on having them reliably at least once a week and for at least two consecutive days.
even if you don't do anything particularly special on them.
days off i can dig. but 'vacations' with a capital "V", hmmm.
well its nice to travel around and go places you don't see every day.
i guess what i'm trying to say, is i don't think of doing so as some big special thing with a big fancy label on it, somehow seperate from all of everyday just living.
if i go some place, its just me, going some place. not some special earthshaking celebratory event.
i like making things. i don't need epic events.
adventures where you learn new useful things from strange places, those are good too i guess.
i just find excitement nothing more then an annoying distraction from things that actually interest and gratify me.
so i go places occasionally, but i'm not going to spend all i have on doing so.
once or twice a year i go to a convention for one of my interests; furry, science fiction, model railroading, usually the most local to me.

i can't image a 'bad' vacation not being in the mind of the beholder, unless maybe its someone else has dragged you somewhere, away from anything that interests you, in which case, well i just wouldn't call that a 'vacation' at all. having to be around anyone is no vacation from anything to me.

you obviously chose the place when you bought it...why spend the rest of your life bitching about it?

What part of Mexico did you go to? There's lots of neat places that Mexico has to offer for tourists that aren't hot, dirty, and unsanitary.
