Does anyone know exactly how world phones work....im traveling to mexico in a month and was thinking about getting a verizon blackberry 8830 world phone for the 5 month trip becuase i wanted a PDA for all my organization and shit.

Do you think it would be better to do that or just get a phone once im in mexico. My friend to me electronics are alot more expensive south of the border so idk what i should do

    advice?

I was looking at upgrading my berry to the 8830, it's a nice one but i held back for whatever reason

imo "world phone" is just a gimick term, all GSM phones will roam pretty much anywhere in the world i belive, so if your phone has a sim card on a decent carrier such as AT&T, you will most likely be able to get reception through roaming in any more metropolitan areas of the world

the real "world phones" are super expensive and super ugly, as they use satelites mostly to constantly retreive signal

You're travelling somewhere nice and away from the bullshit....

Why take a mobile phone with you? It's just one more thing to lose or have stolen. Forget the 'life' that you have at home and enjoy your journeys. There's always callboxes if you want to call family, girlfriend, whatever.

You're going for 5 months, fuck having the nightmare of looking after an expensive bit of kit that will make you eternally angry when lost. Maybe I'm just a romantic but travelling should be about leaving the bullshit behind, no?

^^^ maybe he's on a business trip moron..

Like DJ said... just get a normal phone with a good provider.. if you're gonna be staying in touristy cities you should have no problem getting reception.. ya think all those kids on spring break go a week without their cell phone? ha!

Hey, what's with the name calling? I was just suggesting an alternative viewpoint, no need to shoot me down and call me a moron...

I don't know... It's all a completely alien concept to me but there you go, the youth of this country are poisoned but not to that extent... After reading all these kids starting threads about fighting and all the girls jumping in saying 'yeah, kick the shit out him/her/it' and people being so babyish and pathetic that they can't back down from a fight or go a week/month without a fucking mobile phone I don't know what the fuck goes on in their heads.

Now I just need to find out which way round it is... Am I sane and the rest of the world mental? Or am I crazy and everyone else sane?

    Answers on a postcard please...

^^^ I don't see the problem with cell phones.. they are great if you are lost or your car breaks down or you get in an accident.. you can get ahold of people in emergencies... the think that i think is over doing it is Walkie Talkie service for phones.. it was originally made for the military.. but now all impatient people in the world can instantly send messages without even needing to wait for a ring tone

    Quite alright :)

I have no probs with mobiles either but when travelling I always leave mine at home. If I'm away I like to cut off my connections so I'm uncontactable and don't read the paper or watch tv and deal with that shit when you get back.

    Peace :)

To the OP, sorry for the hijack...

    Then something happens back home.

You can't change whatever's happened so go off and adventure. I usually check my emails once a week/fortnight if I'm away so anything major I can find out about that way and make a call accordingly.

I can't think of anything worse than chilling on a beach somewhere sipping beers and smoking a joint only for my bloody phone to go off and some gimp to ask me if I knew anyone with an eighth hehe

Different strokes fer different folks tho...

the main thing i would use it for is easy contact with my parents. that way i dont have to deal with other people just to call someone....also a PDA would be nice to be able to use for my organization.

PS...its the 21st century. its alright to use cellphones theres a reason why they have world coverage
