Hi there.. I just gave up my comb around the beginning of the year.. lots of nice useful information on here.. thank you!

I was wondering how important a WOOL hat is? I am finding plenty of acryllic and cotton hats in my price range, but not so much wool... my budget is tight at the moment.. but everyone seems to suggest a wool hat...

Hmm, it's also really hot in Florida! =)

    pictures soon..

    TIA,
    bunk

    It depends.

You can get dreads from using wool...

    or no wool...

i haven't used wool, so it is definetley possible to get dreads without wool

i've heard it helps the dreading process along, however, using no wool is fine too, so if you can't find any, don't fret.

check out some other threads here and my new one to get some dreading tips. welcome to the forums [IMG]

Wool is not needed of course, but IME, it helps. Something to do with the friction between animal and animal hair I guess. Also when you're bored you can rub it on your head and THAT helps :) You may want a nice cotton tam for the summer. IMO, a tam of any sort will help, especially if you have backcombed your dreads as the tam will help protect them while they're locking. I've been doing my share of knitting wool tams. I'll be doing cotton soon. If you want me to work with you budget-wise, just give me a shout :)

If you can't get a tam, do you have an old wool sweater that you don't wear anymore? Or you could probably find one for pretty cheap.

Wearing it to bed might help (I find that my dreads play with my tam while I'm asleep...sneaky buggers.)...and some good old fashioned rubbing. Sounds dorky to wear the sweater on your head, but hey, it's recycling!

    Hello fellow attachment parent!
Yeah, I realize that it isn't necessary, but I do need a hat of some sort and I was just curious about the preference for wool. I have found some cheap ones, but not quite what I wanted. I guess beggars can't be choosers, though. =) It's a silly matter of sacrificing wool for design, or design for wool... LOL
I don't even know the difference between knit and crochet, but I have seen the tams you've posted and they are lovely.
The budget situation here is that I really am not supposed to be spending ANYTHING at the moment, but in a couple weeks things should be better. I appreciate the offer. =)
I have only backcombed a few dreadies because the loose hairs were bugging me, but most of them are just natural. Actually, what I did was remove my synthetic dreadlocks, leaving all the sections, and just never combed it out or conditioned it. It worked freaking swell, man.
Ehh, enough novel... I need to find the cord for my digicam... hehe
    Thanks, you guys rock.
