With the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, I was thinking about the significance of bare feet at that event. (Disclaimer- I was not there, but I was a teenager that read about it, looked at all of the pictures I could get from the festival and, of course, listened to the music.) Not only was nearly every one of the 500 thousand people there barefoot, but the culture that came out of Woodstock promoted the idea and ideal of bare feet. I think that kids started going barefoot more after the event. Bare feet started really meaning something significant after we all saw the pictures and film of Woodstock. The NY times just published a series of pictures taken by people that were there. Many wonderful people, and many bare feet.
Yeah, and then the mainstream US culture started putting up NSNSNS signs to make sure those people and those attitudes and values would never be or feel accepted in "real" society. I don't think any other countries even have the concept of a NSNSNS sign. Or am I wrong there?
I've not had problems being barefoot in stores with the NSNSNS signs lately. I think maybe a potential customer in a shitty economy is trumping the store police....maybe
