women more vulnerable to hiv infection, and have a harder time coping with the illness once infected... http://channels.netscape.com/news/story.jsp?id=2005120707007000000002&dt=20051207070000&w=AFP&coview=
Hence my whole keeping it in my pants thing. Well, I don't really have an "it", but you know what I mean. I know abstinence doesn't work for most people, I probably won't keep it until marriage. But don't they have those female condom things? Does anyone use them?
The problem is, they're also in many parts of the world more vulnerable to being slapped around and raped.
And in South Africa, the theory is if you have sex with(read: rape) a virgin, the disease will go away....so many many young girls are getting it that way.
Not just in SA - there were some Africans in England who slit the peritoneum of a baby girl open (fit problems otherwise) and gangraped her in the attempt to rid themselves of the disease.
Yeah, and don't forget about the Catholic missionaries in Africa telling people that condoms don't protect against HIV... Anything to prevent people from committing the sin of using birth control, even if it may save their lives... (I assume this is not normal Catholic practice, just a few radical fundamentalist types, but it's still sickening.)
As far as I know, the Pope is still disencouraging the usage of condoms and regurarly sharing his strange opinion with the rest of the world. According to the vatican, condoms are not adequate protection against HIV. Thus the only way to prevent getting HIV is not having sex in their opinion.... Many africans have sex anyway of course, but without the condom, as it doesn´t help anyway... So it´s not such a fundamentalist thought at all among catholics. It´s kind of widespread in Africa, where people don´t have much access to any science. So if you want to call yourself a true catholic and you want to go to heaven: don´t use condoms! Catholicism, I will never really understand it I´m afraid.
