  2. It would have been okay if she was wearing shoes? I don't understand. What about cleats?

so trespassing on government property to do something insanely dangerous and then arguing with authorities who try to stop you should be ok as long as you're not wearing shoes?

Trespassing on public land is a complete contradiction. Those dudes carved into Mt Rushmore would agree. They had this thing about liberty. The granite at Mt. Rushmore is eroding at the rate of 1 inch (2.54 cm) every 10,000 years, I don't think this woman's barefoot hike wore it down very much.

    Probably an easy climb.

i'm sure they're not concerned about that so much as her falling to her death and then having her family sue the parks system.

She broke the law and got fined for it.

So... the point of this thread is, what exactly?

"plead guilty to climbing the monument Monday in Rapid City federal court, and she was fined $1,000"

Don't just write a ticket for $50, no make an arrest and a federal case out of it !! Thomas Jefferson would be appalled.

In the Black Hills of South Dakota, experience rock climbing unlike anywhere else in the world. The rock formations make it the perfect climbing surface.

Mt. Rushmore is EXTREMELY public, with tens of thousands of visitors per day. I'm guessing park officials don't want the view of this prime tourist attraction marred with swarms of people crawling all over it, with one or two occasionally plummeting to death or severe injury.

I do think a $1,000 fine is a bit excessive, though.
