Yeay! My boyfriend and I got an invitation to check out a house next wednesday! We're third on the waitinglist for that place so it's a pretty neat chance.. and.. ofcourse... it's in Amsterdam! Argh! That's soooo cool! I hope it's a good house and that the neighbourhood is ok (the area used to be a bit shady and some parts still are).. and then we can live together.. IN AMSTERDAM! Yeay! Finally I can start applying for jobs I've got my eye on.. snuggle up to him in bed every single night.. hang out with my friends (since most of'm live there instead of where I live now).. awesome!! So.. wish me luck!
wow great! i hope you good luck with that. and don't worry about the neighborhood, my neighborhood is also abit shady on some parts, but i'm happy cause we both are!
I'm so excited for you! It means that if I need a place to crash, I don't have to travel across the country to share a room with you so you can hear my snoring! BTW, do you still have that recording?
I hope you get it. I will send some energy your way. BTW, you mentioned being on a list in another thread. Why do you have to be on a list? Can't you just rent something that's available, like we would do here?
Yup Monosphere.. I've still got the recording!.. I think.. hehehe.. you snore LOUD! And about the housing.. there are basically two systems here.. one is "free sector" renting (like, you buy a house or a flat and you rent it to others).. second is government controlled housing.. General rule is that free sector is way more expensive, but there waitinglists for the government controlled housings. The latter one is the most common to rent by usually, it's not like the social housing system in other countries that are mostly for the poor or sth. If you live get a house through the governmental system and you are poor, you can get help with your rent. Something like that.. feel free to ask any questions.. it's kinda difficult to explain..
Oh my..... we went to see the place today and it's soooooo cool! It has two bedrooms, a large livingroom with full-length balcony, a large kitchen (with a small balcony), a toilet and a bathroom (pretty ok as well), a pretty ok sized hallway ànd a groundlevel storageboxthingie. We signed a paper saying we are interested in the house.. BUT.. there are 2 people in front of us on the damn waitinglist, so if they want to house they get it.. damnit.. All those papers have to be with the housingcooperation by tomorrow so I guess the results will be clear on Friday or the week after that.. I'm soooo excited.. I really hope we get it!
Good luck, Just out of curiosity how much is rent in Amsterdam for somewhere like you've looked at? My wife and I are thinking of relocating to Amsterdam/Netherlands and I was curious of the cost - Thanks Jon
What you need is a trained assassin. I'd volunteer, but I'm kinda allergic to death. All kidding aside, I really do hope you get it. Curious, what does one need to do to get to the top of the waiting list?
This is the governmental controlled housing system (which is cheaper than private rental stuff) and it's near the Amsterdam Arena (the big football/soccer stadion, which is more towards the edge of the city but still only 10 minutes from Central Station by subway). For this, we're gonna pay ± 500 euro a month. That are the clean rental costs.. on top of that will come water, gass, electricity.. maybe some building maintenance stuff.. internet/tv/phone connection etc etc. Wait a verrrrrrrrry long time.. or date someone who has been doing that My boyfriend has been on the waiting list for over 10 years now.. and that got him on third place for an appartment like that. There are urgency thingies but I don't think any of them will apply for foreigners. Also, for some parts of the city you will need a 'bond' with Amsterdam.. meaning a job. Otherwise you can't even respond to houses in those area. The private sector is totally free though.. you can live whereever you want (providing you have the money for it). I do think there are (international) companies who help their employees relocate though.. like when you work for Shell or whatever.. also teachers used to get help (there was a big shortage on them here), but the rent is still huge.. plus there isn't a real demand on native english teachers as far as I know.. maybe international school, but still they'd have cheaper employees living nextdoor already I guess. Soooo.. I dunno. Though you were heading more to the north-east of my country anyway?
Northwest, actually. But nothing's written in stone. I still need to do some exploring and see how much I love a place or how much the place loves me before I can make that kind of decision.
Hi all, I think if you don't mind to live in SouthEast, you can put yourself on that waitinglist. It cost 57 Euro. The waitinglist for that area is now 3 years. Greetings
I think it's fair to say the waitingperiod for anything is Amsterdam is way over 3 years.. my boyfriend has been on that list for 10 years (almost 11) and it still isn't easy to get something decent. However, if you are willing to take something old, small and expensive in an unwanted area (like the 'K' or 'H' area in the Bijlmer) than you stand a chance if you're only shortly waiting. This year however will be crap if you're on the waitinglist for a short period. The local government is 'cleaning out' the waiting list and everyone who's been on it for a long time (everything longer that 8 years or something) have to get a house before 2006 or they will just loose their high position. It's terrible.. like I said.. even in the outerbound area's a 10+ year position isn't good enough to automatically get a decent house. Btw.. I see you're new here.. welcome!
57 euro is at the moment 75,45 US Dollar.. http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=57&from=EUR&to=USD&submit=Convert The waitinglist thingie is at www.woningnet.nl.. I'm not too sure though that foreigners can get on that list as well..
