I was out driving in the country a few days ago and I came upon a field with dozens of these new fangled windmill things.. I was so happy to see that some one is looking toward the future and taking steps to make a difference I had to applaude their efforts. Way to go, who ever you are!
Yes as a truck driver I have seen dozens of major windmill fields now. Used to be just seen in CA but not TX,OK,PA I have seen them being done. Its a great idea, wish more could step up, wish more ppl would add solar and wind power to thier homes, even if it was just adding a small wind turbine and solar panel each year. Over time we could really help things out.
They are beautiful things, wind turbines. The way they seem to move effortlessly with the wind dispite their size- they are like giant sculptures. I am glad we are starting to use them- if people are going to complain about the signt though (as they do), I am all for building them out to sea. Lets hope this continues!
Wind turbines over the ocean isn't a bad idea at all. Minnesota has a fairly good sized field of turbines west of Rochester. I love driving by and watching them spin in the breeze.
building them over water is really not all the complicated if you think about it. Use the same conepts of offshore wells just need to justify the range for wires that can lay upon the sea floor and we all know that current can travel hundreds of miles thru the wires. Off shore water turbines could be used too. As for the view they create of hinder, well, I have yet to look upon a coal burning powerplant or other power generator and say "Wow what a lovely sight!" I do find some dams very neat but from an engineering stand point and I have yet to see a field or hillside of windmills that I found offensive. I have seen them being transported and being built as well as working. The whole thing is short of awesome. These units are so massive yet when working they appear far smaller and alot more delicate than thye are. OUtside of Barstow CA to the west by the Military base there is a Solar power plant there too, just loads of reflectors all aimed at a center tower, really cool.
"Just like off shore oil rigs." It sounds like an ecological hazard, a political nightmare and an unnessesary solution to an invented problem.
Um, do you know how many turbines you need to be viable, and when you think of that, show me an oil drilling platform of that size.
You keep thinking like tha goverment, "Centeral" and mass sales, that is the problem. You need to think local. Do not try to build loads and loads of something to distribute to many cities but rather be more like a few wind turbines and solar panels at each home, assorted windmills spread around town and parks and as for off shore yes would be many platforms, as for the ecosystem well I think the chance for mass oil spills and chemical leaks from an windmill is pretty slim. Anything to lesson the loads is of help, also need to step up and mandate the use of low energy products, better construction of homes, planned communities, forced recycle and use of those products, methane harvest, mandatory greenbelts, in short alot of goverment power again. Ppl just need to pull some heads out and hear the pop.
Or just have a wider platform, seeing as you wouldn't need 10 levels in height, you could put on much more weight in width.
Wow, listen to yourself, you say we need to maek everyone self sufficient, but the gov't needs to make us use low energy products, build homes better, recycle, harvest methane, that is absolutely hipocrytical.
we already use off shore in the UK and the US. I'd wager it's in the works for other nations. Florida Power and Light is completing the filings for some turbines off Long Island.
You seemed to miss the last part of that sentence. I was implying that ppl would want that or demand that but it could be better accomplished if ppl would take it upon themsleves to work at it. I think an idea of goverment control is us telling them what to do and they jump.
Well, you seem to miss the point that people won't do that, they will do what's cheap, you can't change that.
Do you have any idea of the complications of building a structure, let alone one at sea, what you don't pay to build up, you pay to build out, you need extra trussing under the platform, then you add the weight of the turbines, it isn't viable.
sorry saw that "not" was suppose to be "now" as I have seen them in TX off I10, I40, and around Abelene, also have seen them off I80 in PA, I44 and I40 in OK, tons are popping up.
Yeah not just those areas of Texas, but also north towards Lubbock and Amarillo. Check this out: http://www.windmill.com/news.htm They just implimented a wind generator inside the city limits to power the museum and the surrounding community (not the whole city though). It's a beautiful site to see. And I know the energy company we use for our hose runs a ind farm here in TX, Excel energy. Green Mountian is another copmany that you can switch to if they offer in yuor area. If you are interested in getting a wind generator for your home, go to this website: www.homepower.com and you can search dealers with your zip code.
we have 2 wind turbines... I think their kinda pretty we painted them up and what not Im not sure exactly how much power they supply us with....
