Sometimes tracks I play are too low on volume - its the level they were recorded at and I want to give it some oomph!
Does anyone know if there are plugins for winamp that will boost the volume on a track without distorting it ?
Or some other way of achieving that effect

Maybe you need a better soundcard? For older music, you want to enable the EQ, and boost the bass in a gentle slope. Max the last slider. (60 hz) My EQ looks like a smile. You'll need this for older music and stuff that was poorly recorded.

You should also look at your audio settings in the Windows control panel to make sure everything is turned up. Click advanced, and enable all of them. Look at the levels.

Yeah, the EQ should have a slider that is the overall aplification. Just crank that up.

You could re-convert the audio at a different volume but it would take time and goes beyond the scope of your question.

    :)
