They are planning to make "The Watchmen" into a film for 2009.

Why don't they just leave it alone, they already fucked with V for Vendetta.

It will at least get more people reading the original comics. I'm a case in point, I didn't really know any of Alan Moore's work before seeing V for Vendetta, now I've read that book plus Watchmen, League, Promethea and (ahem) Lost Girls.

Alan Moore is legendary, but I feel that they should leave his work alone. He hasn't agreed with any film that has been made of his work. Although the artist that did the illustrations for Watchmen did help with this coming film and I've seen some of the characters and they look awesome, but I just don't see how they can portray everything that goes on in a film.

Of course they can't. I think it makes more sense to think of the movies as more like advertisements or trailers for the books (this would apply to literary adaptations in general). And if it sends some people to the source material who wouldn't otherwise have encountered it, that can't be all bad can it?

    I completely agree
It was such a brilliant way to depict the events

watching it on a headful of mushrooms really lets you connect with all the experiences

I can't get over how bizarrely American 'V for Vendetta' is, threw me a bit, the first time I saw it. I mean, they're all English actors, speaking English, in a film set and made in England, but they're all talking in Americanisms and referencing American things. 'Lever' does not rhyme with 'leather'. And who's ever heard of "eggy in the basket" before that film? And there's Stephen Fry pretending it's a traditional British delicacy... I wasn't sure if the effect was deliberately disorientating, in which case it was really clever, but I think I decided it probably wasn't either deliberate or clever...

I've totally changed my mind since first doing this thread.
Watchmen is actually going to be awesome. I've been speaking with comic-book guys in shops and have seen the trailer and also became less sceptical when I found out that Dave Gibbons, the illustrator of the graphic novel, actually has been involved in the making of the film... although Moore is still out.

I am very very excited about this now. The scenes from the trailer looks like they've come straight out of the comic. Get on March 6th!

watchmen has been in development hell for years, and now there are legal wranglings over distribution / production rights I'm sure wikipedia has it all. I for one was quite looking forward to it, but I can honestly see it quietly disappearing until the IP is worthless and they shove it straight out on DVD to try and recoup some costs.
