    yeah, why?

if you don't have em now, why did you, or why do you want them?

what are your thoughts on the original method? if you don't have neglect dreads, why don't you? if you could start again, would you neglect? what would you have done differently?

Well I'm Middle Aged, And Throughout My Life I Have Had Just About

    Every Hairstyle Known To Mankind.

I Have Wanted Dreads Since 1995 When I Used To Take My Holidays

Up The North Coast Around The Hippy Area Of Byron Bay, But Decided

Against It Because They Had A Bad Reputation As Only Being Worn By

Dirty Hippies, Dole Bludgers, And Druggies..:(.

Finally After Reading This And Other Dready Sites For About Three

Years, I Decided To Go For It.

I Am Going Fully Natural, And Am About Four Months Down The Track.

Thanks To The Big Rough Woollen Pullover *sweater* I Have Slipped

Over My Pillow, I Have Results That Would Normally Not Be Expected

For About Eight Months, I Thoughly Recomend Everybody Do It.

Fortunatly My Hair Is Perfect For Dreading, Tis Very Fine And Has A

    Slight Curl To It.

Use Nothing But Baking Soda, Have No Dandruff, Or Itch.

The Only Disappointment Has Been The Amazing Loss Of Length..:(.

I Started Out With Hair Between 12 And 14 Inches Long, Now In Places

It Would Be Lucky To Measure Half That, And Some Of The Locks Still

Have About 2 inches At The Scalp Yet To Lock.

To Sum Up, I Am Really Glad With My Decision And Think I Will End Up

With A Good Head Of Dreads By The 12 month Mark...:D.

    Cheers Glen.

really though, for the first 20 years of my life i had a boring ass short hair cut that never changed. Never dyed it purposely or had it long. I had been obsessed with them for the past few years. I have no idea why I didn't start them when i was in college, but after I moved to Oregon it finally felt right, so I went for it!

So I guess I have them because I like the change, and they look pretty cool, and I like to stroke them. People I know think they fit me, or they don't say anything so I don't get shit for them which is nice.

Well, I love to try out different hairstyles and I grew up in an area where quite a few people had dreadlocks so I've always kind of wanted to try them.

Right now I feel like I am kind of in a transition zone from my old life to my new life and I wanted to change something about my appearance to symbolize this, so I figured it was a good time to try out the dreads.

Also, I am getting in touch with my Celtic roots

I first started using the backcombing and wax method, but I knew right away that I didn't like it... so I combed it all out and now I am doing the neglect method and it is working out great... they are really starting to develop nicely.

Short hair looks bad on me, and I wanted to display my heritage.

Ironically it's my black side of my family that has a problem with me having dreads. It's odd, how this world works.

wow, i was just thinking about starting this thread like 3 days ago but i wasnt near a computer and forgot about it. way to read my mind zilla.

anyway, i have dreads because, for real.... fuck you!

basically its because your bible thumping, closed minded mother looks at me totally different when i am wearing a suit and tie then when i am in a tee shirt and shorts and rocking my sandals and she can see that i am covered in tattoos.... then i am weird and i am a threat.

with my dreads, i cannot cover them up with a nice jacket and a tie, i cannot hide the fact that you dont like me based on what i look like, and i think thats a good thing. because if i met you wearing a suit, and meet you for coffee in a tee shirt, things have changed and they changed because you are a bitch. i want to know you are a bitch right from the start, and if you judge me based on any of these things than i really dont want that cup of coffee with you because i dont want anything to do with people who behave and act like that.

so i guess you can say my dreads are my defense mechanism, or you can call them my badge of pride in who i am, i dont really have a reason for GETTING them, but that is what i like most about HAVING them.

Because I don't wanna brush my hair or spend hours styling it anymore. Quite recently I've been non stop thinking about getting rid of them but when I think of the hours wasted styling it and washing it every fucking day I want to keep them.

Backcomb and wax was how I started mine. I like neglect method but I don't think I could do it again purely because I think it'd hinder my chances of getting a job. If I could do anything differently I'd back comb them myself and not spend any money on racist hairdressers.

I'm going to embrace them as much as I can in the next few weeks. They're going to have to come out if I can't find employment before my finances run out.

If I ever kill someone I can change my appearance real quick.

Also brushing long hair everyday is a bitch and messy caveman dreads is pretty well suited to my hairy bastard aesthetic anyway.

    It makes laziness interesting.

If I were to go back or do it over again I would rip more often in the very beginning. I ended up having to slice one at the base of my neck up the middle because it was so big it was restricting my movement. I couldn't turn my head! Much better now. And not a hair was lost :)

uhm....I dont really have a good reason for having dreads. I think they just suit me. Since Ive had my dreads though I have learned a lot about waiting out the tide so to say...in other words...there have been many times I have been tempted to comb because I was unsatisfied with the phases my dreads were going through......but just like in meditation I learned to control my urges by waiting it out...and Im happy I did because I feel with every passing day my dreads transform more into what I want. I am going neglect/natural and it has been a long journey. I am judged everyday by other parents and it used to really bother me but like I said Ive learned to wait it out and now it's not so bad. I feel that I've grown more confident in the face of judgemental people and I love it!

This was the original reason I decided to dread. In the start (early last year) I just wool rubbed like mad and made hundreads of tiny thin messy as dreads, but somewhere down the track I decided to comb out and get thicker, beackcombed dreads, as Ive always loved the look of em. I hated waking up every morning and spending time doing my hair before school. NOW I dont waste a minute doing anything In the morning. When I do decide to cut, somewhere down the line I would love to go neglect and just see how that works for me. Also Im really not a short hair person

Glen you are so very sweet! Thanks for the kind words. I think they fear me because they dont understand my appearance. Mostly I think they fear my partner. lol. I think that they all think we are gonna try and sell pot to their children or something. I dunno.

i've always liked the aesthetic of dreads. i've always been a low hair maintenance person so it suits that too. and having dreads while traveling is great.. every inch of space and ounce of weight counts when you're lugging a heavy backpack around, and i've rejoiced with every 'personal care' item i've left behind. i no longer take shampoo or conditioner, hairbrush/comb, hair elastics or clips.

i also like what someone else said above about knowing right away the people who are bitches because you hide dreads under a suit and tie (or skirt and scarf). i agree. you said it better than i could've so thanks for that ;)

i started dreading my hair almost two years ago. i was out in the wind a lot and the hair at the nape of my neck would begin dreading in a matter of days. it was horribly painful trying to brush it out, and if i left it it was really uncomfortable and pulled really badly. so i backcombed a few dreads at the back of my head in places that wouldn't pull at my scalp. you couldn't even see them with my hair down. it went from there. i've backcombed and t&r'd and then combed out a lot of dreads on whims. i've gotten to the point where i'd rather just be a complete dreadhead and leave them be and just not think about it anymore. so i got a friend to section my hair and i backcombed them all over a period of about a week.

love 'em. at only 2 months they seem to be tightening up really quickly. they look a little different every day.
