Interesting poll here about whether the USA should join the British Commonwealth of Nations: https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090423083047AAYkufb (I guess some people forget we had this little thing called the American Revolution [remember that?].) Anyways, but the one thing I don't get is the response of some guy named Rudolph Hucker. He writes Yeah, really funny joke (so funny, I forgot to laugh). But why does he think we are so un-democratic? I know in the UK they still have the House of Lords, that can delay passage of a bill up to one year. We don't have that. So in many ways, I think we are more democratic than them. So what exact does Mr. Hucker mean? :daisy: :chef: :daisy:
How does being able to pass laws quickly make a nation more democratic? There are no true democracies as true democracy would be extremely inefficient... requiring a referendum for practically everything that passed. There is definitely more room for democracy now that the Internet exists, however... and the fact that we have the ability to give people a bigger role in national decisions and yet it is not happening and does not seem to be a priority is telling of the kind of society we are living in. But I don't know why you're getting so upset about a random quote on a messageboard. The thing about the Internet is people can say whatever they want and they don't have to know what they're talking about before they say it. I would pay attention if he was making sense or establishing himself as a credible source of informed opinion, but that is not the case.
The United Kingdom is a Constitutional Monarchy. The United States is a Federal Republic. Neither is a Democracy. In a Democracy the majority rules, the minority has no protection under law.
not democracy but cleptocracy! Koch brothers, Bronfman, Reichman brothers, Edelmann, Rosenblatt, Weinstock, Weinreb.... need I say more?
