. . . that most people don't care about an issue until it directly affects them? Why can't more seek change? Is it selfishness? Egocentrism? Ethnocentrism? Is it biologically adaptive? Is it regionally socialized? Is it socialized within primary groups (friends & family)? Perhaps it's a combination of everything. How do you all feel about this?
I think it's hard for people to identify with issues that don't concern them because people are egocentric. If it doesn't affect them, many times it's not important. Good examples: Slavery in the 19th century-- many northerners were indifferent to the cause because it was happening thousands of miles away--and slavery is a HUGE crime against humanity! Darfur Hurricane Katrina so many others. People don't want to divest their time, energy, and money unless they're going to see direct results. See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil. These are the true crimes against humanity: not helping those in dire need of it regardless of distance.
i quite agree with janisandgrace, it's hard for people to motivate themselves to do something which they get nothing in return. it's selfishness.
?? me and lovejanisandgrace were in agreeance, and i don't see an opinion in your original post, i don't see how you think we're not agreeing
I don't know. I don't think it's always necessarily just being selfish... Maybe sometimes people just don't even think about issues that don't affect them...as in, maybe the fact that that issue exists might not even occur to them...but, now that I think about it, that's kind of selfish. I don't know. Maybe it is simply being selfish. Every person out there has at least an ounce of selfishness.
I second this. I also thing it depends on the person. Some people honestly don't know anything about certain topics until they become threats. But then, there's some people who are just retarded and couldn't care less about anyone or anything but themselves, and knew that littering was bad for the earth, but didn't care what it caused.
I believe it is the inevitable greed of human nature. We are so wrapped up into what is going on in our lives that we do not realize what is going on in the world as a whole. Even when we think we are helping someone else, we are likely to be doing it to help ourselves. For example, religious people may do a good deed in hopes of receiving a reward from a god, karma, ect. I do believe there are people who do good to actually do good, but they are in the minority. I do not feel this makes people "bad;" it simply makes them human, and humans are far from perfect.
I agree with you. I think alot of ppl just don't know it is happening out of misinformation or just not seeing it. Often ppl just want a quiet happy life and then they don't see the things that would deter them from that goal.
yes...selfishness that's in human nature some try to overcome it and really CARE but some- not (the majority) it's also indifference the thing is it's important to understand this yourself and set a good example to others... dont be desperate about this, Whispering wood...
most people don't even have the slightest idea what does directly affect them, because the're too busy trying to impress each other, to even notice. but then again, most of what we thing we know about most people, also comes from a vested corporate media, so we don't really know that either. i think a lot more people are awaire of a lot more things then a lot of people realize each other are. we're just so conditioned for how we express things in such a way, that it just mostly doesn't seem that way. we all live in a certain amount of fear and i don't know how much good if any hierarchy does, but we can all observe how much harm it does. harm that couldn't be done without the social organization to do so. =^^= .../\...
