Why is going for a walk considered weird for young people?

I like to go for walks at the end of a stressful day. I feel as if it helps me put things in perspective. I'm not sure whether that's true or not, but it certainly helps me relax. I try to bring the dog, so it looks like I'm doing it for his sake. But when I didn't have a dog, I used to feel a bit weird doing it. I'd try my best to go in secluded areas where I wouldn't be seen.

I remember once going for a walk and bumping into a flat mate who was coming home. He said "what are you doing?" and I answered "oh I'm just going for a walk". He then said "oh right good on ya" but there was that little giggle as he said it!

It amazes me the way youngsters don't seem to be able to appreciate the beauty of nature. Their house could be built in the middle of a landfill and they couldn't care less. Or maybe they would if they took their heads out of their smart phones!

I don't really see it as a typical thing younger folks do not do, but personally I don't like routinous walks without my dog. I don't have a dog atm so... not much walks for the sake of the walk itself for me these days.
With dog: always a good time. Without: boring.

Anything you don't have to pay for is suspect, and walking around the block when you are young and healthy is suspect, especially if you don't dress like you are going somewhere special. Its a sign of the ultimate evil in America today, poverty. Rich people have treadmills and join exclusive golf clubs for an excuse to walk around.

I cannot say I've really noticed this phenomena.

Most young people I know even enjoy hiking.

The point in Hiking is to get away from the insanity, meaning, other people, and not to get a little exercise and meet your neighbors. These days, the easiest way to meet your neighbors is to get a dog or borrow someone's dog and walk them around the block every day for a year. That, or go online.

I live in downtown Seattle right now, but I still remember the sky is usually blue and grass is green and trees are shady. Around here, people pay peasants to walk their kids and their dogs. That way, they breath less smog. Anyplace they can fit a bench is automatically dubbed a city park.

I walk every day, and sometimes I am even joined by other "youngsters". SO TO HELL WITH YOU AND YOUR THEORIES.

Actually, I'm not even that young now. BUT STILL.

yeah i really don't think this premise is accurate. is there any reason to assume young people think walks are weird besides a paranoid misinterpretation of one guy's giggle?

I walk all the time, and I'm not terribly old. But it is arguably unusual. I think it's healthy even for a young person. Also, Americans are overweight for the most part; even the young. Walking can burn 100 or more calories to add to your workout. That's what I was doing anyway. An elliptical twice a day, and adding two walks! :)

It may hold some truth with teenagers, but here the conclusion is obvious: they're rebelling against their parents and their 'silly ways'

Woah hey, cool to see you posting!

  16. I think you get a giggle just because legs are inherently silly. Which is just another way of saying 42 is as good an explanation as any.

I walk a few miles almost every morning. It's a habit I started in the military when I ran a few miles every morning for almost seven years. Now my knees won't let me run.

But I understand why young folks now shouldn't walk. It's just too dangerous. Now they can text while driving their cars and the metal of the thing sort of protects them if they get hit. But when you're texting and walking there's nothing to protect you.
