I was just wondering why rascism exists? I mean why do people have prejudice against people because of the color of skin they have. And a lot of so called Christians are prejudiced. If you believe in God, I don't think God tell us to hate anyone, and certainly not for such a pitiful reason. I'm not rascist in any way, I do still have the sense to avoid certain neighborhoods but not because black people live there, just because they are dangerous in general and you hear about it on the news.

You know what's kinda cute. Watch a bunch of toddlers of mixed race play together. They don't give a crap about the different skin color. I'll bet the little kids sometimes ask why the other kid's skin is so light/dark, though. I wish we could all be like that. Why the hell does it matter?

But, you know racism occurs everywhere. African tribes have enslaved each other. I had a Cuban boss that hated Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. Why do people hate each other. Cause they are closed minded and stupid, and it will never change.

Check out the reggae tune Children Unite. It's about how children don't care about race, but then something changes when they grow up.

it's actually been shown that chidlren as young as six months judge based on appearence. including the color of another's skin. so no, it's not always taught to people. most of my negative feelings towards others different from myself ethnicly have come about because of negative experiences and interactions with them. while certain ethnic heavy neighborhoods are in fact dangerous places to go. i'm pretty confident to say not everyone who lives in such surroundings wants to be there or consciously contributes to the crappy conditions and poor quality of life. i don't think poverty is necessarily to blame either. because there ARE rich criminals.

then again racism isn't always about feeling superior to another either. but it is after all a collectivist type mentality.

I think that it is partly a defensive mechanism. People fear that which is different. It's slightly more challenging to perceive a world in which one's cultural values are not necessarily the "right" values, relatively speaking. And like Elijah said, it's also due to a collective/tribal mentality.

That's not true. From the age of 6 months, children start recognizing differences in ethnicities.

Comparing that to judging other races, is a leap on your part.

I would say theres a natural apprehension to outsiders which develops as a survival mechanism, and other races could be seen as outsiders in an older society.

Systemic racism had more to do with gaining support for conquests and keeping servants, and the racism that we know now is more systemic than a natural defense mechanism. IMO.

    NEWSWEEK: Is Your Baby Racist?
    See Baby Discriminate

Kids as young as 6 months judge others based on skin color. What's a parent to do?

i would post the whole article, but it's six pages long. and it's funny that you called me wrong while confirming what i just said ;) this is based on a major study that was done in YOUR state too. fact is, bias towards others is not always taught by one's elders.

racial jokes are funny but thats not really rascism per se. I know of a couple streets on the east side that I would not tell those jokes but rascism is when a person has negative feelings about someone because of their race, or thinks that other races are inferior etc. Joking about it in lighthearted fun isn't necessarily rascism, though some would say it is.

yea, its definitely funny, hilarious actually, family guy exploits it sometimes but nothing is meant by it.

if you want rascism jsut find a redneck they're prevalent in Texas outside of the big cities.

Did you read your article? It was a critique of the original newsweek article. Heres the newsweek article.

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/214989/page/1

The study the article references, children between 5 and 7 were asked in various ways about their and their parents feelings in regards to another race.

The Title 'Even kid's as young as 6 months judge based on race' was based on research conducted at the University of Denver in the 80's suggesting children as young as 6 months were able to discriminate between other ethnicities faces.

In that context discriminate means 'tell the difference between'.

Can you see where I'm going with this Elijah?

Because of class. Black people are an economic class: slaves. Prejudice (gender or racial) is the superstructure that rationalizes class society.

I'm guessing people who are racist derive a sense of identity from their race in order to compensate for the fact that they are not completely secure in their individual existence.
So I guess they feel the need to attack what they see as races that oppose their own.
