I got these two female cats as a birthday present, a couple of years ago. One rather obese white cat, and one gray tiger cat. They were both rescue cats, and they both are very sweet. They are best friends too, which is rare for cats of the same sex. I guess that is because they have been thru so much together. Anyways, they both are fixed (which is very important, BTW). But the white one sometimes caterwauls. They are both in my semi-finished basement (a veritable feline paradise I may add--I wish I had it as good as they do), indoors all the time. And I do give they periodic attention. But you have to understand, they don't have the best hygiene, by human standards. So I have to wash my hands after I pet them. I still pet them once or twice a day. And I do it for several minutes (cats desire to be pet for at least a couple of minutes--I learned that long ago). They should be very happy. And yet, as I said, the white one caterwauls from time to time. When she does, I usually go to the basement, and ask her what is wrong. And she stops, and meows and looks at me as to see, So everything is alright then? As I said, they are otherwise happy, and want for nothing. But non-mating caterwauling. What is the cause of it? :daisy:
There's some simple advice here, don't know how much help it will be though. My cats do this also at times, I think it means they want attention is all. http://petcaretips.net/cat_caterwauling.html
Mine do it when they are excited about a toy, or get left in the back of the house all alone. As long as she stops and returns to her normal cat sounds, you probably don't have anything to worry about. We just refer to ours as "chattin up a storm" when they get going. If yours isn't crying out when you pick her up, and is still eating well, and using the litterbox, she is probably just being very vocal. One of our cats was named La Bouse, it means 'the mouth' in French. We thought it odd, until she would sit outside a closed door and start caterwauling like she was about to die. I guess ya just end up getting used to it, once you are assured that she is healthy. Until she passed away we had no idea how much we would miss the sounds that drove us crazy for years.
