You know, I once was reading a couple of things about the institution of marriage. I goes back to ancient Roman times, at least. And back then it was just an informal agreement to cement the bond between two families. There was nothing legal about it. But there was usually a ceremony involved. It obviously eventually evolved into the religious and legal practice we have today. But do we really need marriage? At all? Religiously, or legally? The Libertarian party says no. But it is important for things like hospital visitation rights and wills and estates when you die. But maybe those things can be addressed in other ways. Also, some people say that broken homes lead to violence and crime. But I was also reading some place, there are countries, like in South America I think it said. And they have a high incident of out of wedlock births. And it doesn't seem to lead to crime there. I guess a father should stick around, especially if his girl friend still needs help raising their child. And later on their son or daughter might need help with college and other stuff. But that can be handled with other laws too. Or it could just be a personal choice. It usually is a personal choice whether a father helps with those things. Unless he is forced to pay palimony. And things like universal health care and the welfare state should help anyone, including a new mother, if she has a financial crisis.
Why do we need marriage? Save yourself the time and trouble, and simply go out, find someone you don't like, and buy them a house.
