i LOVE tofu...it's one of the most versatile foods out there, and THE healthiest source of protein on the planet, yet so many people assume that it's this tasteless jelly-like substance that tastes like ass and that people who like it are fruity flakes...hehe...what they don't realize is that the tofu will take on the flavors of what you cook it with. it will mesh with the veggies and seasonings in a stir-fry. it will mesh with the marinade you bake it in. it is very fleshy and filling and nature's superfood. it should be embraced, not abhored. tofu could very well end world hunger...
Totally agree I even eat the stuff cold sans condiments (though am partial to mashing it with ketchup). It's really not bad.
I like it in soup.I dont know what soup it is but Its the kind you get a Japanese sushi resertaunts.....I think it tastes good.
some people just don't like it, as with anything there are those that like and those that don't... and some are afraid of what is different.
what studies, irongoth? back up your argument with fact, from a reputable and reliable source, then i MIGHT believe you...
Check this for info about the down side of tofu (just did a google search on it, I'm a veggie and eat & love tofu as well.. but getting some info never hurts): http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/hot.htm http://www.nutrition4health.org/NOHAnews/NNF01SoyBeatrice.htm From the last link I quote: "The raw soybean contains other anti-nutrients, including phytic acid (from phytates), which binds and prevents mineral absorption (especially zinc, calcium, and magnesium).3 Phytic acid is present in grains, too. Thus, vegetarians who depend on soybeans and many soy-containing products, as well as phytate-containing grains, are at even higher risk of deficiencies of these minerals.4 Phytates are present in plant foods but not in animal foods. (..) These various anti-nutrients present in the raw soybean can be reduced somewhat by proper heat treatment or by sprouting. However, the substances will still be present, albeit at lower levels." Sooo.. I dunno? The main question is.. will your health get better if you quit eating soy and start eating meat? I think moderation (as always) is the key here. If you eat too much soy-products you might start lacking things (zinc, calcium, magnesium), but if you moderate your intake plus take some supplements occasionaly.. I don't see a real threat? Watcha think?
i don't think it's a real threat...everyone should take a multivitamin/multimineral supplement anyway...in the modern world, we rarely eat any food straight from the field, so we miss out on a lot of nutrients which would be present in a very fresh food. most of us aren't getting all we need from simply what we eat anymore. that's how i see it...so if you eat soy products you aren't going to die or have brain damage
I also absolutely love tofu, and I completely agree, it's extremely versatile and that is why it's so great. I think the main problem is, however, that people automatically assume they hate tofu without ever trying it. People who consume meat are pretty much just prejudiced against tofu because they know that it's a typical food for us "abnormal veg freaks". They don't believe it's "real food" (yes, people have actually said that to me about it before) and well, I couldn't believe their stupidity. How can you possibly believe that a food made from a bean is "fake" while believing the flesh from a dead animal is "real"?? Anyway, I think people should at least try it before they make such comments, and even try it a few different ways, because it is pretty much tasteless on its own and only soaks up the flavors you cook it with. If after that, they still like it, well then oh well.. we don't have to like everything.
yeah, my fiance' who is pretty much a meat and potatoes guy, finally tried some stir fry with tofu i made not too long ago and admitted it tasted kinda good... hehehehe...he also now likes tofutti ice cream! yay!!! new foods for my picky sweetie. gotta love it
Same with my guy.. very much meat orientated but he admits that since we moved in together he eats more divers, feels healthier and lost some surplus weight. A while ago he had chicken and I made marinated tofu for myself and he was pouting that he couldn't have a piece of that as well.. hehe..
I never liked the taste of tofu, but I never really tried to cook it on my own. Now a friend of mine, also veggie, she eats it raw, right out of the package like a chocolate bar. Loves it that way! Bright Blessings! Aphrodite Pretty
I love tofu, its so much fun to cook because you can do so much with it! it takes on the flavor of what ever is around it, so it can taste like something different each time you cook a meal! the other night I made a tofu veggie and noodle stirfry with teriyaki sauce and it was sooooooo yummi! Friday night I'm making a tofu pot pie. its the same recipes I used before I went veggie and all I have to do is replace the chicken with the tofu! Tofu is great, I only wish I would have given it a chance when I was younger!
the super soft tofu with a dash of soy is so goood like that!!! You can even get ones specially done in bamboo stems that are so soft and silky they are so good, when my mates tried it I had to threaten them with bodily damge to not eat the others I had in the fridge!!!
i love tofu, i eat LOTS of it-- however, why people hate tofu...well why do people dislike anything? different strokes for different folks!!
