do they think they will acquire the characteristics of the animal, e.g. the strength of a bull or the fecundity of a rabbit? do they think it contains essential nutrients which can't be derived from plant sources or supplements? or do they just like the taste and texture?
I have absolutely no idea! I believe its just become habit. Its been sold to us. Media, education, some people out there genuinely still believe they need it to keep healthy or even alive! Others realise they dont but just like it and dont want to give it up for ANY reason. Others still are stubborn and so dont want to learn they could live differently. For the majority of people I do just think its become habit and relearning is just too much effort, and while the majoritys doing it, its easy to go with the flow and not think One thing do know is often it takes being away from meat for a while to be able to see it. I know when I ate meat (granted I was a kid) I had many reasons I believed fully justified it...after about a month of making the move to veg (at about 12 or 13, for health reasons mostly) I wondered how on Earth I ever could have done it and believed it to be natural. Kind of shift in consciousness
Oh and how could I forget the whole supposed manliness thing...there are gents out there who really do think eating meat makes them more of a man, because all the lads do it, because of some pathetic hunter warrior image or some crap, I dont know I know someone a bit like this. Hes highly intelligent and has even agreed with my reasoning. But when all the guys are going to Macdonalds, its so much easier to buy in too
Mostly tradition. Few people venture outside what they grew up with. Eating Mexican or Italian is about as exotic as they care for. x
There is no one simple answer. Some do it because they were raised that way, some rebelled from veggie parents, some because they moved to the West and that is how to assimilate, some to prove wealth, some because they have so many issues with foods that the category of animal is the simplest thing to do. Some for basic self-economics: the 99c burger is cheaper (in the short run) than making a salad at home, or getting a stir-fry at a restaurant, and sometimes the 99c burger is the only business in your 'hood. Comfort: it's what mom made, or that's what the holiday "is about" for them. Some truly like the taste and don't have issues with how it all comes to be, or they are content with "humane" methods of raising and slaughter. I know all the reasons to stay veg and I still get the odd wiff of fish and sigh, missing the old foods of my childhood. Then I make some close approximation. But it is not the same. This is where ethics get involved for me.
it amuses me to no end how judgmental vegetarians are..... I have been slaughtering and consuming animals that I raised since I could walk, my family has always made their living by farming and without it we most likely would've been poor and homeless.....judge all you want but my parents didn't have choices without education, they carried on family tradition and the way of life they had always known, perhaps they were ignorant but they worked hard and made an honest living to provide for me and my siblings. Because of that I would never ever dream of telling my father what he's doing is wrong, I am grateful that there are meat eaters in this world, and I understand that there are those who choose not to ,but judging eachother for personal choices is absurd especially for people who claim to be peace loving earth children....
good for you, maryj! I really wish I had this option in my life. Instead, the only meat available to me has been cloned, pumped with antibiotics, hormones, and on top of that it's been tortured and traveled long distanced to get to where I would be to purchase it. Not something I want to eat. I can't wait to hunt down a deer and keep it all frozen I have killed birds with sling shots and roasted them. And I do love fishing. It's just sad, and scary, what the meat industry has done in America.... (and other places...I'm sure)
a friend of mine made the statement,,and it is a valid one,,that there are is a amazing amount of animals killed in the process of feeding nearly every vegetarian. think about all the mice, moles, voles, etc. that are killed every time a farmer plows a field.. and we wont even go into the insects.. i think for that reason the whole "better than you because i dont eat meat" mentality is a bit weak..
It's true... but man, I don't want all that shit inside my body. (The things I listed in my last post) Like I said, I got nothin' against eating real animals... I think a lot of vegetarians don't understand this and they are just pussies.
oh we have only eat what we raise or what i hunt for years now.. i agree that a lot of whats out there is filled full of hormones and antibiotics etc. but the fact is that now more than ever there is organic free range meats available for purchase. its no longer your only option to eat that crap even if your not a farmer..
well I wish I knew where to get some of that. I really want to shoot a deer. This is inspiring me to get a cross bow.
those same animals are killed when the crop is soy/ corn/ hay and then the livestock is killed to boot. Kind of a red herring argument IMO. Less death, lower on the food chain is my aim. Now, I know how you go about your food and have no issues with it. Just the shrink wrapped styro tray world.
wow. just wow. -_- I could list dozens of reasons, but I won't waste my energy on your closed mind unless you're to wish it. Do some research on factory farming and if you have a heart you might change your views. To add to the conversation though, I believe that religion has a part to do with it.. i mean christians believe animals were put here for them to eat.. if that is your excuse, do you think god would want his creatures treated the way they are today? There was also a time when alot of us actually needed meat to survive in many situations, as today we don't. And about the rodents and things in fields.. I feel less pain for them.. because they actually got a chance to live and experience life like it should be, although I wish it wouldn't happen(I plan on starting a garden for this reason, and to save money and know where more of my food comes from.) not that I believe that justifies them dying in the fields for my stumoch, but I also understand it is just a remaining factor in the food chain I am forced to contribute to unless I manage to grow every single thing I eat.
if vegetables are so good why do so many cover them in herbs and spices? geeze.. no one is condemning your choice to be a vegetarian. i expect the same consideration from you.. dont buck up against me on this one drumminmamma will have to put a gag in my mouth..
