Ok i wanted to know why people spend so much time backcoming so tight. I always here people saying it took me 2 days to backcomb my hair or somtimes a week.

Cause i didnt backcomb tight at all. Does backcombing real tight speed the process more. It only took me 4 hours to do my hair.

Did i do somthing wrong from not doing it so tight.

    I didnt even loose lenght.

it took me about 2 months to back comb mine, but that is simply because I had plaits that I turned into dreadlocks only a couple at a time. They are done by different people, some did it tight, some did it loose and a lot of them are just natural forming dreads where I had left my hair so long :D

The ones that were back combed tight are much more tighter than the looser ones. But I love my looser ones just as much because they are a lot more natural looking with lots of loops.

I hadnt lost a lot of length either until about 3 months in and my hair really started to shrink as my dreads started to mature a little. My hair is still shrinking now between 10 - 13 months

Im only baseing this off of my experience and comparing my dreads to my friends dreads. My friend backcombed hers super tight...it took her 3 days to do her whole head. About 6 months later, her dreads were pretty sweet. They're still really nice, she's had them for about 2 years and they are really uniformed looking. They have no kinks or loops. She did them herself but they look proffesionally done or something...they're almost too perfect. My dreads on the other hand....lol.....are a combinatin of loose backcombing, tear and rip, and some are just completely natural with no backcombing. Ive only been growing them for about 1.5 months but the loosley backcombed dreads are already getting loopy. I think they're pretty cute. So...there you have it.. take that for what you will!

y'all crack me up with this backcombing business. i didn't backcomb at all.. and my hair dreaded up just fine. think about it.. hair naturally dreads up on it's own.. otherwise no one would have invented combs and brushes!

I don't see why there's a reason to be patronizing towards those who chose to backcomb. Different strokes for different folks.

I did a half ass job back combing my hair, and occasionally re-comb them. I didn't want to make them too tight, because I didn't want to hurt myself. Patience and backcombing have provided me with terrific results thus far.

never backcombed mine eithger and the couple i did lend a helping hand to gettin em started was very loosely ust fiunger teased or something.. i think when ppl backcomb so tight they have an idea of wanytting perfectly uniform perfectly round perfectly straight dreads..and they want em perfectly erfect from day 1..

i'm not patronizing anyone... i just find it funny how so many people are in such a hurry to be dready. when once you are all dready.. it's going to last forever or until you cut them all off.

I backcombed my dreads so I could have some control over where and how they formed.
My first set were not thought out in that way and there were 2 dreads that pulled on my scalp (and it freakin' hurt) when I was sleeping, or rested my head on something, or when I pulled them into a ponytail.
This time around, it all feels good. :D

edited to add: Some people just have alot of hair-it took me about 15 hours over 2 days to backcomb my hubby's dreads, just because he has so much hair; about 150 dreads worth.

ONLY REASON I BACKCOMBED WAS BECAUSE I WANTED NICE SECTIONS. im NOT TRYING TO RUSH IT. EVEN THO IT DOES SPEED THEM UP. I WOULDNT CARE IF I WENT BACKCOMB OR NATURAL

dude, turn off caps lock, please!

I had back combed dreads because I needed to put my employers through the shortest adjustment period.
That and I fidget a lot and it worked well for that set of dreads. I'd mess with one for a while and then another over a week.
I'd do it again, because I do want locs of a certain size range, and my hair is really, really straight and slippery. Backcombing overrode that.

arlia! i haven't seen you on here forever! then again i haven't been on here forever, so that might be part of it. i was admiring your wraps today.

as for the OP: everybody is different, and so long as you didn't use wax you haven't done ANYTHING wrong- the process is a wild and different journey for all of us. the only WRONG way to backcomb that i can think of is by doing it too vigorously every day for a long time- that'd just make the hair break and the lock would fall off. then you would have tired arms for nothing! :)

mine only took 4 hours, not so tight either. They still have a life of there own and no mater what i do there gonna do what they want "eventually", backcombing tight would just delay the inevitable "loosening", making the process of dreading longer. but that's just my hair :)
