Because I enjoy it? It's just a convenient way to express myself, and looks nice too. =3

glad you brought this up. In my art class we have to study art and take tests on art history, and i'm sure it's like that in all art classes. I don't think that it should be required because that's not increasing you ability to make art. Making art is. I personaly could care less about art history, i just like to make it.

Because human beings are extremely complex, maybe infinitely complex, and there are things that can be expressed through art that our 24 word alphabet language just cannot convey. Art is human communication. Speaking and writing are just two limited forms of it. Art is my soul speaking to yours.

I guess you could consider art as the expression of creativity. And without that we wouldn't have new inventions, new ideas, ect. We would be nothing!

I'm thinking you were thinking of some specific type of art when you said that. Otherwise you wouldn't have said it.

Because if I didn't do art, I would explode =) No but seriously, it's a means of expressing oneself (as everyone else has said so far). And more specifically it's a visual way of expressing oneself. Visual communication is important, and it's more direct, more "in your face" than say, literature. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE literature. I write poetry as well as do art. Writing is also artistic though. Anyway, it's just another way of expressing yourself.

I love the "because if I didn't do art, I would explode"... I think that really sums it up.

because it makes me happy and keeps me from dying of boredom

and the reason to study art is so that you can appreciate it and maybe even become inspired to make your own. Try it.

Art is life and life is history. It all goes together. With that, we must learn from our past, not necessary to repeat it but to be inspire by it, to respect it =) Art is one's own expression, with that is nothing but admiration from artist to another, respectively.

Learning about art and art history is great way of helping to expand one's visions, not just on an artistic level, but also socially and philosophically (although art can be something deeply personal, it can also be a reflection of the times regarding culture, politics, etc.). It also helps one to look beyond just the surface of all things visual.

I asked this question to my teacher. He said, "why breathe?". I thought this answer hit home.

    It depends on the person.

For some it's just something to do---a hobby.
For others it's a way of expression.

Hehe moonlightdelerium, your answer made me smile. I really liked how your teacher answered that. Well, for my answer, a lot of people I know have changed a lot since they've gotten into art. They used to be a lot more violent and aggressive but now they're not. I'd much rather see my friends stick to paper and pen or paint then seeing them with guns and other bad stuff, hurting others or possibly themselves.

I love this quote about creativity and art..."Why should we all use our creative power? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold, and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money"-Breanda Ueland

For me, art is the expression of my soul. Take away my freedom to create and you might as well take my life...going back to the teachers response, "why breathe?" Everyone has different reasons for making art, but ask any artist why and they will say its imperative to their well-being.
