I recall onetime at a concert where someone said to me "Ill bust your F*ing teeth in you F*ing hippie! F*ing longhair piece of shit!" or something to that effect. Ive always had to wonder why some people are so strongly anti-hippie. If you want to trim your hair shirt and eat meat, I can jive with that. If you dont want to smoke pot, trip or clean up the environment, I can jive with that. Ive met these people though who will say things like "I hate everything vegetarianism stands for" or "I despise free love, environmentalism and all that hippie crap"
Some because they just are easily annoyed Some because they are just too different from them Some because they are dissappointed in the hippies Some because they regard it as a thing from the past Some because they feel threatened/attacked by them Some because they hate to be told things Some because they sometimes seem to be even more hypocritical than the average people Some because they just can't believe people who only ramble about peace and love are for real and think they should knock some sense in them Some for a combination of the above reasons. Etc. etc.
I think it stems from a hatred that innately negative people posses for idealism and anything that goes against the status quo. To make a change from negative to positive requires you be a hypocrite while in transit. You have to change your mind before changing your actions. Visualize, then manifest.
well because there are many people out there that are close minded, full of mental problems buried deep inside, with a lot of insecurities and mostly they probably had a very bad lifestyle to give them example what is good and what is wrong and to shape them as not so intelligent beings. And insecurities usually lead to hate towards things u don`t understand or u know that u will never be anything close to them even if you want to. and bla bla bola things like that, with two words there are simply haters in this world.
people love to find ways to insult no matter what they may be...i can't tell you how many times i've had people call me a dirty hippie-even tho i'm pretty sure i shower everyday and i dress professionally for work...people just love pushing buttons. i'm sure if you had that grunge look or that punk look, they'd call ya somethin different. i've stopped caring what people say...this is me...take it or leave it!
I dont mind what anyone says and in no way am saying that Im being bullied everywhere. Im just trying to understand the logic behind the mindset in a logical manner.
Yep, double standards. If I talk about vegetarianism positively, I'm looking down on other people but they're free to do it all the time to me.
A lot of people simply hate anybody who is different from them. It's a symptom of ignorance and not being able to channel or control their anger in a mature way. I used to know some old-school hippies who hated guys with short hair.
Yep. The reasons for the hatred are as numerous as the haters themselves. No point in worrying about it beyond that. They'll come around eventually, or they'll be miserable for the rest of their lives. No skin off my back. If someone wants to be angry and aggressive with me, no worries, as long as their hatred is only the shape of words.
Well, you don't have to 'be a hater' to get pissed of by hippies. To be honest, hippies can be very irritating
i cant speak for anyone else but myself but my reasons are that 99.9% of those claiming to be hippies nowadays have ZERO work ethic, have no concept of personal responsibility, have their head in the clouds about the reality of the world, and of those 99.9% half of them are thieves and liars. this is speaking from personal experience as one who has opened his home to "hippies" for the last 20 years.
Most of its just a laugh , a game. Altho other people here act like they were abused as children. They'd be convinced their own kitten was their worst enemy , and worthy of attack. -------------------------------- But I think the cynicism /dislike of some hippies in Britain anyway is that they always talk about change and stuff. But really its an academic thing for em. They don't tend to effect change.Maybe its due to the fact some of hippy stuff's views involve reincarnation and stuff - rather than just *this* life? Many of em I've known were quite priveliged , dossed round at college , did bugger all , and had their father get them a poncey job at an investment bank. Then u see people who's protests/ views actually did things.Say the ones who became criminals /businessmen etc and sent money to good causes.
Sure, I think that's true about anyone who's always up in your shit and preaching though. If someone labels themselves a hippie (or, indeed, anything else) I take them with a grain of salt. But there are certainly a fair few people who are full of anger, fear and hatred and get pissed off over petty little shit like what hairstyle someone else has.
To be fair, one can hate idealism and the status qou. Dont be a stupid hippie and assume that everyone that hates you is a polar opposite
Does that really only apply to now? not that i've lived in the 60's but im sure a big proportion of those who called themselves "hippies" were as you described as the hippies of "nowadays".
Too many posts with too much text...so, I'll just answer the thread title question... I consider myself "half-hippie". I love my neighbor (and especially his wife). However, I basically lead a 9 to 5 life (actually - 8 to 430). A lot of "too-straight" people might consider REAL hippies to be parasitic in nature - and it is true to some extent. To work and so many other boring things about the 9 to 5 life are not just about conformity but about necessity. There'll always be conspiracy theories but basically the capitalist system is the "least worse" way of life. Some thieves wearing a tie fuck up people but they are a very small %. For the rest of the ok people, it's normal to work and get a pay, put some $ aside and try to "buy" your dream (house? family betterment? Car? ...ect...). So, like everything else - there are different shades of being a hippie. If some people are "so strongly anti-hippie" some, are not, some are tolerant and so on...
I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate hippies; though I may joke about it. I dislike all neat ideological boxes (not only hippie) because I think they are all wishy-washy. Of all the labels, hippie is probably one that I think about the least actually. But it's true that I identify with some ideologies more than others: I think the ideology of primitivism, environmentalism, and pacifism indirectly promotes class inequality though its intention be the opposite.
