Some people hate hippies because their mere existence threatens the social order. They figure everybody should be a slave to the almighty dollar and buy into the whole psycho world view that America is the greatest and has the right to rape the environment and the rest of the world so Americans can remain drunk and enjoy their football on big screen TVs and all that other shit. I spose there are stupid hippies too although I haven't met any lately. There are probably lots of pseudo hippies who are basically suckers for the whole consumerist attitude and shovel in junk food and x-box violence and think getting a buzz on is for their own private 24/7 mind orgasms but they are not true hippies who are the true Aquarian age people of the earth, who live naturally in harmony with the planet and each other, etc.
Pretty extreme view, crazylegs... Can't a hippie enjoy some x-box violence and still live in harmony with the planet?
Dude i watch all those shows and they do make fun of hippies but they also make fun of other stereotypes too. Especially South Park I don't even know if there is a group that doesn't get made fun of on that show they get everybody. I wouldn't worry too much about it because I doubt the whole world is gonna turn on hippies at least I hope not.
you gave the answer already: hippies do not conform it doesnt concern hippies it's about everyone non-standard the society loves equality- but not in the sense of having the same rights but being identical in views and looks my father says "all normal people beat hippies" he dislikes hippies for long hair, "no family feeling", "no wish to work" and so on prejudices
Hippies hated? Come on. EVERYONE in this country is hated by one group or another. Look around these forums and it does not take long to see examples of "hippies" (yea, right, not if you were born after 1960 pal) hating on everyone that doesnt agree with them. Christians, Republicans, Military personnel, homosexuals, etc etc get so much hatred its pitiful. SO before you go crying about people hatin the poor little hippie, look in the mirror and remember your own words about others. Personally I hate the whining vegetarian maggots on here but thats just me. But im fine with pretty much everyone else.
Shows like South Park are satirical about everything ~ it's little to do with 'hating' and more to do with just trying to get a laugh. King of the Hill and American Dad, to the same degree, are more so just an exageration of the characters themselves, I would think that those shows are more critical of the conservative red-state folk than anything else, if you were to watch the show as a whole.
For a great look at WHY South Park is so critical of events and "movements" see South Park and Philosophy: You know, I Learned Something Today. blog entry: http://thetruthenlightensme.blogspot.com/2006/12/philosophy-of-south-park.html I found it a hoot, personally.
I usually don't post things unless I am moved; I enjoy seeing the younger folks rediscovering my roots and digging them. It's a far cry from todays' mainstream youth, who in my opinion are lost, or perhaps have lost their soul to the media hype. Hippies aren't hated, just what hippie stands for is.. and it always was hated. Many here have hit some of the important things on the head, but the bottom line is not necessarily "non-conformist" it's just thinking outside of the "box". The Media box.. and don't you dare do that and come to your senses! I have seen over the years that the media is a powerful tool and is used in the most evil of ways. It illustrates the evils of peer groups by categorizing folks by economical standards. Think about it, if you don't have what group (A) has, you are in group (B) etc.. Think of Harris and Klebold as a product of this evil. Southpark is a by-product of hippiedom gone bad, mental grey areas as; if you don't grok it, redicule it..another evil. Our generation did reproduce some monsters, because we tried to maintain a lifestyle that was hugely scrutinized by the media. As Neo... trying to live 2 lives where 1 of those lives don't exist or is contrary to the real one and which is in control? The end result is just plain hypocracy... In closing, our lifestyles and makeup are bought and sold by the Media, no one can use their own intuition and good judgement, the media does that for us. How sad, I feel sorry for the youth today, as they have nothing in comparison to the days when "Hippies" came to be. They had and took many freedoms for granted, yet wanted to break the chains of that old mold of mediocre-media-society control. Young folks today can't do anything freely, not just because of the rules, but because of those that broke the rules... a catch 22? I'm a Father of 2 young adults, so it's something I had plenty of time and instances to "grok" Peace to all...
I love that Hippie South Park episode. I'm not even a South Park fan. Parody is another way to compliment things. Just like the Roast shows on TV. I wouldn't take offense to that show. Just laugh, it was funny. In fact the only time I ever see it is at rock festivals when my hippie friends put it on the wide screen.
I get that the shows themselves are all in fun, but its the way people take them literally is what make me say we are hated. Because most people don't know what sarcasm is
I wouldn't use "South Park" to prove your point, as that show pokes fun at everyone under the sun. Comedy is about learning to laugh at ourselves. People who are easily offended and defensive will not find watching that show enjoyable. As for those who truly do dislike hippies, I think it is partly due to the fact that there are certain aspects about the hippie ideology that they find threatening. For instance, when the term "hippie" comes up, people think of peace activists, environmentalists, vegetarians, ect. All of these people support helping the world and doing what is moral in some way (promoting peace, taking care of the land around them, helping animals). A lot of people start to feel guilty when they are confronted with thinking about what they could be doing to help our planet but aren't. That is my outlook, but I could be wrong. I also think it has a lot to do with the stereotype that "all hippies smoke marijuana, are lazy, and are dirty." Of course, this is a generalization, but that is what people do; they generalize. I wouldn't take people like this to heart. Chances are, they dislike a slew of other people, and that is their problem, isn't it? Just remain true to yourself, and don't worry what others think or say.
yeah, the stereotype of the hippy isn't exactly a GOOD one, but i don't see it as negative. but some people just think of dirty, smelly, long haired, peace-freaks who sit around and smoke pot and drop acid and listen to Hendrix. if they can't deal with it, that's their problem lunarflowermaiden, haven't heard from you in the Cream thread in a while, lol, i posted after i got back from the Clapton concert.
