Damn, I thought I had a reasonable idea before I read that article. I'd always assumed that somewhere back in the dim, distant but post-decimialisation past they'd cost 99p. Now I'm just confused....

Apparently the first shop to do them was 99 portobello high street, and they thusly called it a 99

EDIT: (just finished reading the article, that also says thats a theory)

This shows my age, because I recall buying a 99 in old money, lsd. I seem to remember when I was a kid paying half a crown - two shillings and sixpence - or twelve and a half pence..

Says something about inflation over the last 30 odd years too.

I'm still shocked that a bag of wine gums costs over £1.30 now.

    Why in my day....

Dude, I read that article a couple of weeks ago and it made me think too. I can't come up with any logical reasons though :)

But that just leads us in a cycle. It's like the chicken and the egg. Are the cones called that because they're designated for 99's icecreams, or are the icecreams named after the cones? And if so, why are the cones called 99?

The story I always heard was 99s are called 99s cause they're exactly 99 millimetres long. I've never actually measured it (I'd look bloody stupid in front of the ice cream van with a ruler) but it seems to have the ring of truth to it.
