Now before I get started, this is not a "who will take over for Phish" thread...

I, like many other phans are sad with the breakup of Phish and are looking for some new bands to try and replace them. I have followed no other bands these past few years than Phish and now that they are out of the scene I want to know what other bands are worth catching live. Names like moe., Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident and others have caught my attention but I dont know much a bout their music or the quality of their live performances.

Anyone with info or an opinion on who is good to see on tour would be greatly appreciated. Esp. who has the best/ most trippy jams.

I saw phish over 70 times between 93 and 98 and basically only a handful after that, once I started going to widespread shows. They are just a better 'band'. Around 96, phish lost a lot of cohesiveness and trey's ego really started to fuck shit up where the shows were no where near as good as what I had been seeing in prior years. Unfortunately, wsp is taking this year off - 2005 can't come soon enough. Another lesser known band that I probably like seeing more than anyone is ekoostik hookah, but they rarely make it up to new england. If you have a memorial day or labor day weekend free, do yourself a favor and go out to ohio and catch one of their hookahville festivals, you will not regret it.

    Other great acts:

    the Disco Bisquits
    the New Deal
    moe.
    Galactic
    new monsoon
    soulive
    yonder mountain string band
    keller williams

there are plenty of great acts out there on the jam band scene, i honestly haven't missed phish at all in the past couple of years.

sir paul mccartney is alway amazing live
i also enjoy santana in concert
    jeff beck another great.
there are far too many to name.

the most recent concert i went to was The Westminster Abbey, having gotten their record 5 weeks ago and love it everyday(maybe time to buy another), i was thrilled they were passing thru my town. i saw them 2 weeks ago and was completely blown away at the intensity and energy of the performance. they played all but one song off their new record and played 3 new ones, the crowd including myself, loved them and i'm anxious to see them on their next round. i highly recommend this band to anyone tired and bored with todays mediocre bands/music.

I guess I am a trditionalist and think THE DEAD are a must see. I also really really like the Darkstar Orchestra...but I mean....I like many bands. I am looking forward to catching ICP and MUSHROOMHEAD at the Norva In October. Not into that. Tryout the Accoustic Syndicate. Bluegrass Jam rock. You cant go wrong with whatever local bands play the bars where you live either. The next Pink Floyd or Phish Or Metallica or Grateful Dead or Nirvana or Legendary Pink Dots is just getting ready to play their next show, and if you dont show up, they may not get enough chances to perform and become what they desire to be. Music is out there. Experience all of it.

Well you probably wont like it, if you arent into harder music, but my favorite band to see live is Slipknot.

For anyone who likes to mosh, they are a must see. They bring so much energy to their live show, that even if you think they suck, you have to admit they have so much energy and go all out during their live shows.

Mudvayne is also the same way, and they are my second favorite live band.

If you open yourself up to music that is outisde of your self imposed genre, you will find that you can see maybe 40 good shows a year depending on where you live.

And crummy is right, there are great bands getting started all the time, unless you live in certain lifeless areas.

PRIMUS is fuckin right. Les Claypool is the fuckin man. What about particle. That was one of the best live shows ive ever seen, and ive seen alot. Theres no cool feel good lyrics, just jam, but still an amazing show. Also, the dead and the allman brothers are still touring. But still, you cant go wrong with cheese. And as someone mentioned, acoustic syndicate is great live. I cant wait to see em live at rythme and roots.

No one will every take over for Phish. It is so sad to see them go.

If you are looking for a band to follow it's gotta be Cheese. The first great aspect about the shows is the scene. It's much different than Phish's scene which towards the end was very large and diverse (former dead heads, dirty hippies, trust-fund hippies, highschool preps, college sluts and drunk frat dudes). Naturaly, they were playing to very large crowds. There is nothing like a String Cheese lot. You see some of the phreakiest kids around. great people, phriendly atmosphere. The followers of Cheese are some of the phriendliest people you'll ever meet. And its the same people that you dance your ass off with for three hours inside. Cheese always picks the phattest venues. Theyre usually nice, small, and very intimate with great acoustics.

You gotta have the great acoustics for Billy Nershi who plays one of the meanist six strings I've ever heard. His style is kind of a bluegrass/island music combination! I've never heard anyone that sounds anything like Billy on Guitar. And Michael Kang plays the violin/electric mandolin! He's pretty good on the violin. But his jams on the mandolin are just as innovative, technically brilliant, and mesmerising as Trey's and Jerry's! I'm not saying he sounds like either one of them. But he definately has become a "piper"! He has the ability to make you ask, "what does that mean?" , through his playing. Kyle has the same ability as a key board player! I think he's the best keyboard player I've ever seen. Keith's style as a bassist to me resembles Phil Lesh's playing a great deal. Travis is definately a great drummer/bongos and can definately play a phat beat, but I admit there will never be another Fish. ever.

Lyrically they have not reached the technical/creative level of the Dead, Phish, and even Panic but the lyrics are fun to listen to none the less. The jams are the important thing to me. They dont play as much hands down rock'n'roll as Phish. It's a happy kind of music you can just bust a groove to. It's easy to do crazy dance moves to Cheese. The jams are just as mellow as the Grateful Dead and as fast and technically complex as Phish. They are extremely trippy. Also no one can get "wierd" like Cheese. Not even Phish. Not even Pink Floyd. Extremely skilled lighting crew as well. Not quite as good as Chris Kuroda(thats his name right?) though.

Cheese is a great band to follow. I've seen them 35 times. saw every show from 3-21 to 4-21 2002. Saw majority of Phish winter '03 shows. Before the hiatus I caught three. I definately can say with confidence that I enjoyed my Incidents much more.

To sum up there will never be anything like an Incident! No one will ever take over for the String Cheese Incident. When I think of more I'll let you know. Check out www.friendsofcheese.com

    Peace
