Have always had a soft spot for Sidney Bechet... Armstrong to jazz is Marley to reggae, so i won't bother... Nina Simone is one of my fav jazz singers, Miles Davis was a huge influence for me. John Scofield is definately notable. Being a drummer at heart, it'd be terrible for me not to mention Buddy Rich, the greatest drummer of all time!
I have many favorites: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gilespie... I could go on for hours.
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman. I dont really know anymore jazz musicians
As in #1 favorite? There is no #1 for me in jazz or rock. There's too much great stuff out there. Jimmy Smith is an important starting point for me as a jazz buyer. Afterwards I discovered other artists.
Hell yea man, Coltrane is bananas, hes so sick, anyone who likes contrane should consider Pharoah Sanders (most beautiful/wierdest dude on the planet), also dont forget Dizzy and also billie holiday when she was with lester
omfg, there's just too many!! Quite a few have been mentioned already. Add Kimock, and Scofield (MMW of course but they been mentioned)...Zappa had some great jazz too...Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Branford Marsalis...Django Reinhardt...sooo many great jazz musicians! ps~ ty drumminmama, bookmarked his site!
Definatly Thelonius Monk, his piano skills are amazing, has anyone ever seen him play, he plays with his finger completly flat. You watch him and you like how the hell can he play that good.
