are jokes. -after reviewing peoples thoughts on the subject i have come to the conclusion: we categorize everything. from chemicals to produce. remember when you were little, the shape sorters? its human instinct, to group things with what they are most similar and name them as a whole. Labeling means naming. Things almost always have to be named to be known. The human mind is aware of many things, some of which are more similar than different and others that are more different than similar. To make sense of these things an intelligent person assigns them to categories based on similarities. These categories are usually given names. This is what labeling people means. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Not all labels are negative. Not all of it involves dehumanizing or objectifying others. And not all objectification is bad either. Sometimes these categories are not very intelligently designed. Crude categories and hasty generalizations are problems with organized human life. Yet it would be impossible to think without them. If you could live without thinking of categories of things you would probably not be able to think of very much. It is best to accept these limitations of your mind and try to be aware of them. Also try to be open to people who are different from the types you know and recognise that individuality is real too. understood now, thank you for your time and answers.
Geeez i kinda think the title of your thread could use some work, oh I see you're from NY, nuff said, have fun with yourself.. Peace
seeing as your 3 hours south of me thats a silly statement i could come give u a high five and be back in time for dinner ur so close! people who call them selfs a hippie, place a label upon them self's totally eliminating the entire purpose of being a free soul. I find it funny
i don't think it's up to anyone to judge or define a person i respect the identity people choose for themselves..
Generalizations are neither good or bad. It's how they're used. They can be derogatory pigeon holes or common ground for like-minded folk.
other people call me a hippie. it's their prerogative. i call myself sunshinechildsupergroovymcTHWERP!
this all arised from talking to someone, and he was like, this kid, who dressed up as a hippie, and like i started talking to him, and he was like the op posit of hippie. just after hanging out with him, he threw his shit on the ground, was throwing rocks at birds, i thought he was chill. so we went to the state park and walked around, and he couldent just sit and enjoy and be respectful. soon as his water bottle was out he through it on the ground, i picked it up and carried it. he couldn't leave ANYTHING be in the woods. he would walk by a tree and rip a branch off, and would drop that one and just pick up a rock and throw it at some brids sitting there. or just stupid things and its it got to me. and then i was thinking, its so easy to call urself a hippie, anyone can say they are a hippie, but the word is just a mask. then i was like, wow. anyone can wear the label, but i guess hippie comes from the heart. i was applying the statement to most people in the forum, due to the fact this is the HIP forums. im just applying it to most people that u meet on the street that call themselfs a hippie ya digg? Most of the people on this forum, are chill. I posted that to see the responses that i would get and i sure got alot of good ones aha. but nah, thats not what its about, its not focased twords you people at all. more twords the people who just wear the image, and not the heart and soul. just another label.
probably the best way to put it. But people just try to be something just to be it. and they just dont carry the heart of it. bothers me.
Just so your expectations of us don't get too high: It's called the Hip forums but the vast majority here are decidedly not hippie, in any way, shape or form.
Labels are tricky. Mostly, labels are just words and we need words to communicate verbally. For instance, "free spirit" is another label and another type of word used to define something or someone. So, to denounce the word "hippie" as a label, because the person who was using it was not a "free spirit", is to simply substitute one label for another.
I think honestly the only person who ever called me a hippie was my ex-boyfriend. But he called me a "Fat Hippie ****" pardon my french. I don't think of Hippie as an individual person but more as the title of a subculture. I other words, an incredible group of people that could not technically be labeled but since we needed an easy way to reference we made up the word Hippie. That's confusing.
Oh, I dunno... there are all types of people here. There are people who are hippies and don't want to call themselves one, and then there are people who aren't hippies but do call themselves one. I guess the point is, you can call yourself anything you want, but your actions and attitudes will usually out you for what you really are.
