This is just fucking SICK. Anyone who would actually support the Bush regime after this is a fucking lunatic who should be deported to one of these "torture-friendly" countries. *As an aside, they've BEEN deporting people to torture-friendly countries since 9/11 - it's only now that they're actually proposing making it "officially" LEGAL. SICK SICK SICK SICK SICK SICK!

    White House Backs Torture-Abroad
Law Bypasses U.S. Interrogation Restraints, 'Rendition' Bill Angers Canadian Arar

    By Michelle Shephard

WASHINGTON - The White House has endorsed a proposed bill that would make it legal for U.S. intelligence officials to deport individuals to countries known to use torture to extract information.

The "9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act" marks the first time the U.S. government has officially scripted its policy known as "extraordinary rendition," whereby American authorities can circumvent their own restraints on interrogations by sending suspects to countries known to employ harsh tactics.

Canadian Maher Arar alleges he was a victim of this practice, which is the crux of the lawsuit he has launched against the U.S. government. Arar was detained in New York on Sept. 26, 2002, on a stopover flight to Canada, and after two weeks was quietly deported on a private plane to Syria, via Jordan. He says he was questioned and tortured for almost two weeks, then held without charges in deplorable conditions for a year.

"What does this mean for Canada? Should we keep maintaining the sharing of information knowing now, publicly, that this is going to happen?" Arar said in an interview Wednesday. "This administration is now showing their real face and hopefully people now understand what kind of human rights they're trying to violate."

Arar's lawyer, Lorne Waldman, said passage of the legislation would provide further impetus for Canada to review current arrangements with the U.S. on intelligence sharing agreements and immigration laws.

In particular Waldman pointed to the proposed Safe Third Country Agreement, a Canada-U.S. regulation that would force refugees to seek safe haven in the first country they reach. As many as one-third of refugees seeking asylum in Canada come from the U.S., which means they would be sent back there to make refugee claims.

How can we be fighting a war on terror, trying to create a more free world, while at the same time encourage and support the torture of individuals?
    We can't.

This is simply the modern-day practices of the KKK, made legal by the government. Will any white people or black people or any non-Muslim be put under this torture? Most likely not.

It's necessary in order to extract confessions from Tursts. Once they've confessed, then we know they're a Turst. Once so identified as a Turst, then hey, the ends justified the means, by god, after all, we done caught us a Turst. Sorta like how the Traitor Party (Republicans that kill American soldiers by using them as pawns) explains how the present Iraqi resistance proves the need to invade them, because, by gawd, we HAD to go over there to fight the resistance that sprang up in response to our invasion.

And we're fighting for freedom, against bad evil people who don't want freedom; we like puppy dogs and kitty cats, and they kill puppy dogs and kitty cats. God Bless America.

My Fiancee called me tonight at work and told me about this. All I can say is write your state representatives, congress, whoever. This homeland security shit is getting out of hand. And they wonder why other countries torture our people when they capture them. I hope this bill doesnt pass, its likely it wont. The 911 commission is getting a little too power hungry. I hope the canadian guy who was falsly accused and tortured sues the pants off the government. Its shit like this that causes more terror on US and foreign soil.

Yeah, sorry about not comming in sooner and "defending". Been busy working and living a real life. I don't get the luxury of sitting in my underware for 24hrs reading blogs and posting some left wing article that doesn't cover the whole story.

Anyone know what he was suspected of doing? Doesn't really matter does it, he was a suspect. If evidence points to him, then to bad for him. As for interigation methods, you do what you have to do to find out information. UNtil some left wing scientists creates some human friendly device to read minds, you will have to settle for torture sometimes. It's an ugly buisness, but sometimes the information is worth it.

If they are suspected of whatever it is they are investigating, then yes. Are you seriously this dumb?

Actualy, all of you must be this dumb. Not a single one of you are willing to do anything at all to change it other than sit in here and post crap. I'll keep watching the news waiting to see where you all have risen up with arms to overthrow our government. Until then, shut up, because you know you aren't going to a damn thing about it.

What can we expect from a political party whose Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, has sexually molested children under the age of ten? Notice that they don't like to talk about that little fact either. Next they'll be trying to say it didn't really happen. Have they no decency whatsoever?

I have never labeled myself .. and am not american so i don't think i can be a republican or conservative .. are they the same as British conservatives?? well i hate them .. i vote for Labour Party http://www.labour.org.uk/ourpolicies/ ...

Anyway i think that because i believe this war in iraq is the right thing and i don't actively denounce Bush and don't realy like Kerry then i think i am part of the 'enemy' . Personaly i think that it looks a bit dodgy but i am assuming the worse ... I think it maybe quite worrying that i am actualy trying find some merit within this law ... i don't think it is a racist policy though... just because i am sure 'white' countries have torture in some form as well unfortunatly . Is it removing the `Western Hemisphere' only provision or something so people can be sent wherever in the world ???

http://www.movingideas.org/blitz/ its a bit hard to work out ??

If some one can briefly explain .. much apreciated.

If i am right then this does seem like inhumane way to be..but i don't have a real clear idea what the total ramifications of the law mean at the moment. Taking away peoples hatred of bush anyway whatever here .. it still sounds terrible .

Have you heard of any white people being tortured by the American government since 9/11? No, they don't even consider that Al-Queda has white subjects in the states.

What makes you think I haven't written my representatives? I have written to Senator Brown twice, not about this issue, not yet anyway, and I've talked with representative Terry Musser many times on various issues, he lives not 10 miles from me.

Have you seen any white people cutting the heads off of people and sendign the recording all over the internet? Have you seen any white people flying planes into buildings?
hey aren't looking for color genius, they are looking for people that shows signs of terrorism or connections with people that have been discovered as a terrorist.

Guess what Marry Poppins, a spoon full of sugar wont change things. Our governemnt is to set in it's ways to want to change without being forced. Hell our own citizens are to comfortable living their lives thinking only of themselves. The American Revolution, now that was something that made a difference. Remeber, they tried letters and pleading first, none of that worked. In the end, it was war that solved the problem.

    I actually have seen this.
How are you so sure that it was Muslims who flew the planes into the building? Doesn't it seem a little fishy that the U.S. government knew all the hijackers' names a little over an hour after the attacks, and they were still let on the plane?
What is this Cat Stevens' bullshit then? How does a man who is a known peace activist wind up on a suspcted terrorist list? Could it possibly be because he's Muslim and is speaking out against the war? Also, in New York State, a number of Yemeni men were arrested, with no charges against them, and they were held without being charged for months before they were found to have no terrorist connections (no surprise there) and let go.

How is this war solving any problems? Problems in Iraq are growing bigger and bigger, and I believe that since this war has been going on for so long and so many Iraqis have been murdered, I doubt our country's relationship will get any better than it is now. And besides, atleast I am doing something, thats more than your lazy ass can say.

So lemme get this straight: do you support the government arresting and torturing people because of the color of their skin?

So many people have blind eyes when it comes to politics..CAN YOU PEOPLE NOT SEE WHAT'S GOING ON??? We are losing this war, our soldiers are getting killed everyday, each month has more fatalities then then the previous..INNOCENT Iraqi's are getting killed..CHILDREN are murdered everyday..beheadings are happening like clockwork.come on WAKE THE HELL UP! And we can't get out of this war, we have to stay in it as long as necessary, but with this administration, the BUSH ADMINISTRATION, we will never get out and if we do it will be to fight another stupid war! How in the hell is this war the RIGHT thing? Why are we over there again?? Let's see in the debates the other night as my sig says..Bush stated "But the enemy attacked us," Now, for you people who still think Bush is the way to go..I don't see how, because he said "But the enemy attacked us," and just like Kerry said, "Saddam Hussein didn‘t attack us. Osama bin Laden attacked us. al Qaeda attacked us." So, if that doesn't tell you something, then as I stated, you have a blind eye to politics and the TRUTH!

We all have our limits, if things get too bad, you will see us rise up. If peaceful protests don't work, perhaps it will take more. People are starting to see the light. Blacks knew they shouldn't be slaves, that they weren't "less human" than whites. Women knew they were equal to men. People just won't get held down for long, it's not in our nature.
