I'm too broke to buy weights, ATM. Joining a gym is out of the question. But I love to work out, so's I put some heavy books in my backpack and did 4 sets of quiet burpees with calf and leg raises at the end. So, let's see...which books did I put in tonight? The New Oxford Annotated Bible, Complete Pelican Shakespeare, Houaiss Portuguese Dictionary, and Prentice Hall's Art History. I try to switch them up every time and I have plenty to choose from in my library. They all added up to about 20lbs. on my scale. Great work out! Have you ever worked out with books in your backpack? If so, which?
I have not had this experience and I've never heard of it but I think I will try it tomorrow! I think I'll have a dictionary I need to pull out of my closet, and a huge book of fairytales, also maybe the best english poems collection. hahaha. I'm easily amused. It'll be nice just to add something to my collection of odd things I've done.
i get a free gym membership from work. as far as i can remember, i never really used any alternative forms of weights to work out. at least not specifically for the purpose of working out. of course, when i used to bale hay back in high school, i think that was probably the best overall workout i've ever done.
Weights aren't always necessary. I get plenty of satisfaction from doing pushups, chinups and dips. I lift weights, too, but I don't think the gym is always necessary. 300 pushups and a couple sets of chinups and dips suits me just fine. But I am not looking to bulk up -- just maintain a lean and muscular physique.
I've become interested in increasing my arm/shoulder strength, and have no interest whatsoever in going to a gym. This sounds like an excellent way to build up strength. I believe I'll start out with a few (old Compton's) encylopedias, like A and B or A, B and C or some such.
I'm always looking for ways to exercise without going to the gym. I like your idea of using a backpack full of books. Do you have a staircase in your home/apartment? Try putting on the backpack and running up and down the stairs in intervals (run, walk, run, run, walk, run...etc.). Another thing with the stairs and bag: Try hopping up the individual steps with both feet. Do it until you can't do it anymore. But, I suppose you didn't ask for advice or ideas. To answer your question: no.
