I was thinking of flying to the UK via USA and thought about breaking the flight at San Francisco. Where is somewhere cheap to stay?
You might want to try like staying in Berkeley or somewhere near but outside SF. It's about 15 mins from SF, has its own hippie vibe to it in some spots and will likely be cheaper.
Can you get to Berkeley by public transport from the airport ( international one if there is a difference)?
Yes, you can get there by Public Transportation, I don't know where the international airport is though.
This site always has cool places but it's not very sensible. http://www.jetsetter.com/search?q=san+francisco&source=TopNav-nofollow&type=Organic
Several good hostels in SF. Avoid tenderloin, I had several friends have stuff stolen from that one. san Fransisco International Airport and Oakland International are on the train loop, called BART. San Jose is NOT. But might be on CalTrans. What are your dates?
Links of use: My favorite trip planner, for mass transit or checking traffic for drivers http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/mtc/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?#tab1Selected It's useful because I get the bus on one system (AC Transit), get on a train at BART, and often need Muni in SF. And sometimes, CalTrans. But that's too much. Golden Gate Park is on the N Judah line of Muni, fwiw. It's walkable to Ocean Beach and Baker Beach (foot of the Golden Gate, clothing optional) Hostels http://www.hostels.com/san-francisco/usa Interesting things to do: Www.funcheapsf.com
Finicial District was real expensive, as is most anywhere in SF, but in particular that's the high end North Beach seemed more affordable and pretty chill Would probably agree with GB, go across the bay bridge to stay in pittsburgh, berkley, or oakland. Though I hear oakland can get pretty rough Stay the fuck away from tenderloin -- from SFO the BART goes all the way through SF and oakland. Pretty much every stop is infested with bums, and the rate is kind of expensive compared to other cities. Just remember, SF is the most expensive economy in America, and it shows.
I'd say be careful with Downtown Oakland as well. I'm a veteran of the SF Hostel Scene. Unfortunately the ones that I was staying at are all closed now. C/S, Rev J
Pittsburgh is pretty far away from SF, I think it's the furthest stop on one of the train routes, also is considered fairly rough area in some parts .
It is the end of the Pittsburgh Bay Point line. You also might want to stay out of Richmond too. Both Richmond and Oakland are on the list of top 10 most dangerous cities in the US. C/S, Rev J
Marin CO--is nice. Cheep hotels in Berkley and you can pay by the hour ---I like the mission and the HAIGHT oops--but I have a lot of friends there. FB told me a girl I been llooking for for 25 years was arrested in San Rafael the other day--prob. violation. She was still in booking when I called the jail, but 3 hours latter she was gone. Only $5000.00 bail--I would have paid it but.... Arent you back in Denver? Aloha Brah
The Motel 6 Tenderloin can be interesting. I've friends who stay there when Royal Pacific (Chinatown/North Beach line) is full. As for Oakland, that's where I'm exiled right now. It can change block by block. BART stations are no worse than any other city. Except for the transit cops (see the film Fruitvale Station. And Fruitvale happens to be my closest station) The overnighter transbay bus is a special kind of freak show.
I live in Oakland, but between West and East, so imagine a DMZ or no mans land. My closest BART is Fruitvale, and I ride on NYE. Starting the year after Oscar Grant died, however. It's a be aware place. Richmond is "hella ghetto." As the kids say.
