Hey I'm about to start a colony for the fungus, but I need to find a place locally that sells 8 oz or 1 quart staight canning jars and right now I am out of luck. I looked at two local craft stores and at Lowe's, but have come up empty handed. I don't really wanna risk getting that large of a package ordered to my house, so could someone point me in the right direction?

Walmart and many large grocery stores have them.

Walmart, Safeway, Bloom, & Shoppers Food Warehouse. Craft stores are way over priced.

My mom's house. Couldn't find mason jars any damned where except online, and my order is floating around somewhere.
    So, yeah. My mom's house.

I personally enjoy the container store. They got everything you need to store about everything you could ever imagine. Check em out, like, they got every container every made. :p

...Still can't find the blasted jars. Went to Walmart, Shop Rite, Lowe's, Home Depot, AC Moore, Michaels, Acme, and a few local odds and ends stores only to find that my area has an abundance of tapered mason jars and nothing else. I'll check Wegman's and maybe BJ's next.

I've never heard of the container store, Safeway, or Bloom and Shoppers, so I'm thinking those chains aren't in my area.

Right now I'm about to just forget about it and use some larger straight glasses instead and fashion my own lids, which really ain't too difficult.

If you aren't making cakes (ie: you are making spawn material) then it won't really matter if they are tapered or not.

I mean, it's pretty easy to stick a knife into a colonized jar of bird seed to loosen it up a bit, then dump it out.

    Peace, good luck!

I was gonna go for the typical Vermiculite and Brown Rice flour method for my first time, since there is a LOT of information out there with that method. Once I'm familiar with growing shrooms then I'll take a look at other methods that may take more knowledge.

I used whatever I could find before I got mason jars. These square jars with good enough lids.
They're fruiting ok, just an overabundance of white fuzz from too much moisture.

    Sketchy at best.
Bloom is the same as Food Lion. Here are your stores:
    Atlantic City
    Jersey City
    Newark Food
    Paterson Food
    Trenton Food

Bad idea. Go with a 50/50 mix of bird seed and rye berries.

Why bad idea? I've read many reports that said it was easiest to use that method. What are the advantages/ disadvantages to the bird seed/ rye berry mix?

The advantage is that it's just about the best substrate for your situation. The only disadvantage is having to find a place to buy rye berries.
