..... you never know who or what may wander in! Hi ya'll! I grew up (as much as I ever "grew up") in south-western Ontario in the 1950s and 60s. I was a curious kid and wanted to know and understand everything about the world around me. I spent a fair amount of my childhood exposed to traditional Native culture and grew up with mostly the same values and attitudes so it isn't surprising that I gravitated toward the Hippie movement when it began to spread in the 1960s. I have fond memories of "Love-Ins" and impromptu musical gatherings every weekend in King's Park in Toronto, of people laying around in the grass on a warm summer's day, of music jam sessions, and of some 'enlightened' soul going up to a mounted city cop and offering him a hit from his joint LOL! (The cop just said "For gods sake, at least try to hide that!"). We didn't hear about Woodstock until the week after it happened - too bad, we were only a couple of hours drive away! I went off to college in 1969 and returned in 1973 but when I looked around, all the hippies had disappeared. Well, not "all" but most. Is did connect with a group on a communal farm outside of London (Ontario) and spent a lot of my time "on the farm" when not working for $$. I went on to be "voluntary staff" at a private communal school in nearby Wardsville and stayed there for about a year. In 1976 I went off to get married, moved to Montreal, split from my husband, and eventually ended up in Manitoba. I made some concessions to The Man but never sold out. I always remained a crusader for equal rights, feminism, for "living lightly on the land", and for loving everyone and treating them with respect and kindness. I haven't worn moccasins and tie-dyes for a long time but, in my retirement I still ride a hippy bike and live on a rural acreage where much of what I need comes from the land and goes back to the land. I know an awful lot of people who called themselves hippies back in the day but damned few who seemed to have really believed in the goals. I miss my hippy friends! I miss 'the culture'!
