Hey, I could be mean and insult you in this thread, but in fact I'm going to ask a question that's been nagging me for some time, I hope you can enlighten me on this, maybe debate a little if you disagree with each other, and stuff. Isn't that mighty nice of me? :)

So. When Passion of the Christ was going to hit the theatres, there were worries that the movie would encourage antisemitism among christians, because the jews supposedly killed their messiah. Also in Medieval europe there were pogroms, in which jews were persecuted and put to death with not much to say regarding their fate... if I remember correctly this was for the same reason: that the jews had forced Pilate to crucify him and release this other guy (Bar-Abbas, could that be correct? )

Anyway, here is my question, and I'm not accusing any of you, because I know that if you were intolerant regarding race you would probably not be on this forum. But why would the christians blame the jews for killing Jesus? I mean, they may have, but wasn't all of that foretold, wasn't that all part of the plan that god and Jesus had agreed upon, and which later turned out to enhance the fame and influence of both a thousandfold? Wasn't Jesus supposed to die on the cross so he could rise again three days later? Then why would any christian have any feelings of grudge against the jews, shouldn't their close affiniation with god and their aid in Jesus' reaching his ultimate goal be some sort of safeguard against feelings like this? What do you think went wrong with some people?

    Thanks in advance!

I do find humor in the idea that people think Pilate needed to be forced to crucify ANYONE. Apparently, a lot of people haven't read much about him as a leader.

Most Christians I've met don't hate Jews or blame them for Jesus's death, though. Some do, but not a lot. The only people I've met who were like that were Jehovah's Witnesses. Not any mainstream Protestants or Catholics that I've known. Maybe I've been lucky, but I don't think it's so common anymore. That's kind of an old way of thinking. Remember, even though you always hear about the worst, the worst represents a small percentage of people.

RE: But why would the christians blame the jews for killing Jesus?

    Matthew 27

22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

    ----

That was the reason for it in the Middle Ages.

These days it's hip for Christians to love Jews.

I'm interested as to why you think that Christians hate/hated Jews? The first Christians were Jews. They are not typically anti-semites, at least not those who adhere to the greatest commandment.

He is probably getting this from A@E 'Bible Documentaries' or from a College Professor or these sorts of things.
I just recently saw one of these on St.Peter where, just out of nowhere, the 'documentary' suddenly 'asks' if Peter would be have been surprised by the 'hatred' between Christians to Jews... and I SHIT YOU NOT they then cut to a shot of a Jewish Cemetary vandalised with Swastikas and Nazi spray paintings!
I swear to you they did that!
Im still trying to find the episode name and get some sort of group action on this because that is down right DISGUSTING of A@E to do that.

But yeah... Im sure there are some Christians who have it in for Jews somehow and there are some Jews who hate Christianity.
But that something which individuals are doing amongst themselves.

There is no 'Thing' where Christians have it in for Jews.
Its not a real 'ongoing established social situation' or something like that.
There is just media crap like AandE saying so and then showing you a scene of a defiled jewish grave with a swaztika and making people have emotion reactions like "Whoa.. why the hate Christians?'

The nonsense about 'The Passion' movie is just that - nonsense.
Well yes.. 'Jews' (specifically certain zealous leaders of certain sects) wanted Christ Dead.
Well I dont know how to tell people this but there were only two types of people there, Jews and Romans.
This also may come as a surprise but Jesus and his followers (almost everyone) were ... Jews!
So would it make just as much sense to accuse 'The Passion' of being a 'Pro-Semetic' movie, since the Hero is a Jew?
Nobody thinks these days I swear.

Right on Man! It ain't the Christians who hate the Jews, but "they" would like for you to think so.

The truth is, people are still trying to kill Jesus.

    Two things:

Christian antiSemitism was REAL and a very powerful force right up til the 20th century.

    AND

    RE: the Passion

Mel Gibson's dad was a Nazi. The son hates Brits and Jews as well.

    Go figure.

    Christian Anti-semetism is over-rated.
One of the reasons we know this is because Jews have most all ended up in (what was then) predominantly Christian Europe.
Even lately, Evangelical USA was the destination of choice and I believe there is still said to be more Jews in the USA than anywhere else.
(Russian would be close Id guess?)

As far as Mel Gibsons Papa.
Well, as near as I can tell that seems to be the real reason some Jewish groups are freaking on this.
What can I say to that - you shoud hear some of the wacky ideas my old man has about the world.
Gibson Sr is around 90+ years old and I dont think anyone needs be too worried about some crackpot comments he came up with once.

I seriously have no reason to believe Gibson hates Jews or Brits for that matter.
You cant just say that about someone just because.

    Too many.

Why pick on Mel Gibson or the Christians? Arabs still hate Jews! In fact, global anti-semitism by countless groups, races and cultures is still a real and very powerful force and has been since the Hebrew nation began calling themselves God's chosen people. In fact, you need go no further than the Christian Bible or the Torah to answer the question "Why is that?". And if you don't want to answer the question from a religious viewpoint, let's face it, humanity in general is cruel. We don't like or trust anyone who claims to be superior to the global pack.

While those who call themselves Christians may not all practice what they preach, Christianity was founded on tolerance, inclusion, and love for all mankind. Even for one's enemies! That is why the first Jewish Christians expanded their faith to include non-Jews (Gentiles) who they had hated for thousands of years before!

Sadly though, most people including many Christians, can not or refuse to live by such standards because they call for self-denial. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he would lay down his life for another." In the end, our biological human propensity to survive overrides the notion of selflessness on behalf of another human being.

While it's obviously true that most christians are not anti-semitic, most anti-semites are christian. Nazis were (and are) christian, kkk, and most groups like that are christian. And weren't pogroms happening in the 20th century too?

To call yourself a Christian is to state your affiliation and belief in the teachings of Christ. Christ never taught hate. He was all about love. Those who call themselves Christians who embrace hate are imposters and are easy to spot if you know anything at all about Christianity.

Oooops, wrong again. Most anti-semites are Arabs

Aren't Arabs Semites? I know according to the Jewish creation story, Arabs and Jews are decended from the same son of Noah (Shem)...

EDIT: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=semite I rule , but I hate the english language...to many words that have the same spelling and pronounciation, but different meanings  For me, a Semite is what the first definition is, not only somone who is Jewish  But yeah, for many many years, it was Christians (and probobly stil is) who were the most anti-semetic people [ie Crusades] and Muslims and Jews traditionally got along not horribly

No, Arabs are of the Arab nation and descended from Ishmael who was the illigitamate son of Abraham. The Hebrew nation, or Jews were descended from Issac, who was the legitimate son of Abraham. Abraham is considered to be the Father of the Nation of Israel who God defined as the chosen people. It's why the Arabs hate them and continue to war against them. Palestinians, Saudi Arabians, Iranians, Lebonese... well every other country in the Middle East other than Israel are Arabic.
