My boyfriend is joinning the army. He gets in my car today and says My recruter says they dont recrute women because they are the weaker sex and smiled. Though I am pretty sure he was just joking about women being weaker he blew it off when i got upset about the comment. What would you do?

File a discrimination lawsuit.. j/k they might make you join if you did. I'm sure a letter to his commanding officer will do the trick.

Your boyfriend is joining the army? Even without the stupid comment that alone would make me really think about where that guy's head is at.

What would I do? I'd think about seeing other people.

Did the two of you have a chance to talk about his decision before he signed up? Does he know that he may have to kill people and risk his life to advance goals that he may not agree with? Wow.

Its true the US Army doesnt recruit women...BUT they only dont recruit for certain jobs. e.g. infantry soldier, mortarman, tank operator, APC operator...because women have a lower capacity for physical exertion (dont argue with me its been proven) women are more prone to injuries and can take on average about 1/2 of what men can before physical breakdown is imminent.

I think its your boyfriends decision to join, and I dont think you can talk him out of it. Most people who want to join are "this is the only thing i want to do" sort of people. you could try talking to him though. see what happens.

Just so you know - that's bull shit. I just read yesterday that women in the Canadain army can join any field and that people in charge are not worried about thier ability because it is proven that in battle conditions women can handle everything just as well as men can.
I am in the Canadain army and my experience is that the whole thing is one bi mind game. Like my Sgt. on course this summer said, "I like to mind fuck and I am good at it." The army is not about being physically strong it's about being mentally strong.
I am not even going to comment on Levi's remarks because we live in a free country because of the existence of our army and she has a right to say whatever she wants (even though it's the stupidest thing I have ever heard!)

WHAT? They certainly do. My 18 yr old dd gets about three letters and pamphlets a week from the armed forces. (I asked the school not to put her on the recruiting list, but they did anyway.)

I got non stop phone calls and letters when I graduated HS, while I was IN college and after I graduated college. They kept calling me and promising me money, and a job in "intelligence" if I wanted and all kinds of BS. They recruit nonstop.

WHY would you want to anyway? They treat you like shit, they lie to you, and you have to go to shitbox places in the godforsaken desert and KILL people. Why in God's name would you or anyone want to do that?

Hmm, I agree, Maggie. When I was a senior in HS, a recruiter came to my house. He didn't do his research on me though...I'm German!

I'm not sure what your problem is. Is it that the recruiter made a sexist comment? Or that your BF reported that comment to you? Or that he wasn't outraged enough?

Yeah, they definatly recrute woman in the US military. Last year, my senior year of high school, I got about 6 phone calls from the Army and 3 phone calls from the Navy. I have a shoebox full of pamphlets sent to me in the mail. Of course, the Air Force, the only part of the military I'd ever consider joining sent me nothing, but that's not the point.

As for your problem, I'm not sure what I would do about the officer, writing a letter sounded like a good idea. I think if my boyfriend said stuff like that to me, I'd sit him down and tell him that it hurts me when he says things like that. Even if he's kidding, there's some things people don't like being teased about.

We can all take comfort from Lynndie England, who's proved that women in the Army can do anything men can do.

Yeah, all that 'Has he thought about the possibility that he might have to kill people?' bullshit, huh? What kind of freakin' hippie would propose that someone, especially a young person with his whole life ahead of him, should give such an important decision some serious thought?

I'm such a liberal whacko! But then, I guess that's why I peruse the forums in the Hip Universe.

I'm not saying everyone on these forums has to feel the same way about a teenager's decision to join the military. I would point out, though, that people who feel the way that I do about this issue might not be in the minority in the Hip Forums. Duh.

Eh, relax. Don't get so upset over joking comments. I'm sure he didn't mean it, and if he did, you probably wouldn't be with him in the first place. So just fucking chill.

    Exactly :)
Had way too much exposure to MASH, Wilfred Owen etc to appreciate the army.

We never get the kind of thing here, the odd stupid advert and tables at career fairs, but that's about it.
America, land of the free, lmao.

I think women are part of every army, officially or otherwise.

I was mad because it was a sexist comment. I mean I am upset about him selling his soul to the goverment for a 20,000 dollar sign on bonus but its his call. We didnt talk about it he acts like its none of my bussines. It was the sexist comment that set me off when i talked to him about it later he said the recruter also said "would you want a hostile female pmsing beside you in combat."
