We may be on the verge of seeing the entire "System" collapse soon. The world's banks have created a huge crisis by investing in very risky financial tools that are now failing.

These tools have been used by banks and hedge funds to invest in high yielding, yet risky loans (subprime). Worse yet, these loans were bundled with less risky loans, so the whole packages, worth $10s of billions are now spoiled like boxes of rotten apples. Banks can't possibly repay the loans they've been given by the central banks to cover their losses on these instruments.

So if these banks fail, as some now fear might happen, how would that affect us and what do we need to do to survive?

Here's what I believe could happen... and very soon...

    1. Banks collapse, money becomes very tight, currency eventually worthless... Forget using an ATM or Credit Card!
    2. Gas prices soar, availability becomes very limited - rationing.
    3. World Wide Web gets SHUT DOWN to prevent people from organizing and taking action.
    4. People protest, National Guard (what there is left of it) and police & armies (what's left of them) try to maintain calm.
    5. Protesters get locked up in concentration camps already setup for this
    6. Martial law declared, police state in full force.

    Now, whatcha gonna do???

In case you don't believe what I wrote above, here's an article from today's BBC website...

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6986777.stm

It says European banks will have to buy back their own debt to the tune of $142 billion in the next 10 days...

That's a LOT of cash to lay out! The real problem is nobody is sure what that debt is really worth. So a good portion of that $142 billion will be LOSSES for the banks.

Indeed the banks are the ones who SHOULD lose money in this situation. But this may STILL only be the tip of the iceberg! US banks also will lose bigtime if the Fed doesn't continue to bail them out...

You do realize that we had credit crisis before? The last one actually did more damage then the current one is doing.

This would be nearly impossible. Shutting all the DNS servers down maybe, but we could still use direct IP addressing for communication.

I'm gonna hunker down and be glad I've been stocking up on things and have been working torwards self-sufficient living for the last two decades. Financial system collapse is one of the many scenarios that can deny us of the supply chains that most of us rely on for subsistance. Alaskan had an interesting thread about emergency preparedness going in the Future forum. I think a few of us were likened to gun toting Rambo freaks ready to take on the US government, but in truth when things really hit the fan not many of us can hide out own our acreage with enough food, supplies and water for very long without money and the financial network intact.

And Gravity I don't think that the WWW would really be that difficult for the US government to shut down. Shutting down several dozen or so Tier 1 routing hubs in the US could effectively render the net useless.

There are many ways to accomplish the shutdown of the Internet. The US could turn every unsecure computer online into a slave overloading the system.

They could shut down our computers themselves if they're running Windows and possibly other operating systems via backdoors.

I assume they could shut down other types of communications including all satellite communications except their own (the Chinese & Russians will probably take care of ours).

Just wait until the FIRST INTERNET WAR happens. It could be soon. It might not last very long, keep your eyes open for warning signs.

Like the Chinese successfully hacking into Dept of Defense computers.

    Oh wait, that just happened.

Good thing that those Corporations in charge of the infrastructure, you know those telecommunications companies would never break the law and let the gov't do whatever it wants with their lines and equipment and private account information...

    Oh wait, that happened too...

But the US gov't would never interfere with Free Speech and International Commerce!

    Ummm.... wanna bet?

As un hippie as it may sound....this is the reason I stand behind my belief in possessing fire arms ...call it paranoia or whatever...but I will protect what is mine and those associated with me ...and use whatever it takes to survive....that is the nature of the beast...and when the beast comes a knockin'...I have my own teeth to sink into it's ass...if that is what it takes.......the pacifistic ways will only get you locked away in some holding camp to be consummed by those that claim to be protecting you....yeah right...just look at the patriot act...in the name of our protection...bullshit....any body that believes that ...might as well go ahead and turn yourself in to the government

events such as Kent State and the likes of those affairs...will be like pre-school...when the machine starts it's march through the country...and sad as it may seem....flower power ain't going to mean shit...except being killed or detained...fire power in the name of self preservation will be the answer
I am sure I will be attacked for my views on this matter....but facts is facts

Self-substaining communities will be the 'target' from
    all sides
Only direction I can fore see in future is more educating how to proceed to live alternatively
    away from this corporate-military-governement
    system
That in itself at this time, an in near future is kinda risky unless more information gets out there
Anyone objecting to obeying certain laws, now look
suspecious and are targeted as possible terrorist against the government
So.....back to 'mud-sink-hole' .....how to get out .....without sinking further

I think this is just scare mongering, are ou trying to create mass panic? People have their everyday lives to think about, children to raise, jobs to go to, without worrying unneccesarily about this kind of stuff. It's a case of crossing that bridge if and when you get to it.

The best insurance for looming disaster is to treat the people around you with kindness and patience. That way if something happens you'll have people that will be there for you and if nothing happens, well then you'll have people that will be there for you.

Those who are prepared physically & mentally will be far better off than those who carry on as normal. What's going on ain't normal however...

    I'm watching things today...

So far the US $ is tanking. I'm watching it break thru into record lows against the Euro and Pound today. Lost 1 cent in just minutes! Now worth 1.384 Euros.

This sell-off must indicate either just profound fear or inside information...

Always a good idea! In cities most ppl don't even know their neighbors. I remember when I lived in Alaska, everyone LIVES depended upon their neighbors being there for them in a crisis.

But also I've seen a lot of resiliency on the part of strangers faced with situations beyond their control. As long as everyone feels equally affected, they will respond with kindness. If the situation is one-sided with certain groups being singled out, they will respond with anger... Sometimes violence...

I think that you raise a very good point, even though I don't think that such a doomsday scenario is as imminent as you propose.

Shit will eventually hit the fan. I don't think that it's going to be as soon as this year. There would have been more signs. It's hard to believe that everyone other than some conspiracy theorists and a couple of hippies is just so oblivious to this. It would be fascinating if some experienced economists would actually make a study on this.

Anyhow, point being... one must be prepared for anything; the collapse of the system, or even getting stuck in the forest alone for a week. Humans lack all the basic survival skills. I myself have been sharpening up on outdoor skills just for the sake of knowing them. It's sad that they don't teach us these skills in our schools, making us even more dependent on the system. It's a sad America... the older you get, the more dependent you are... no matter how many illusions of freedom you have.

You hit the nail on the head. The long-term goal of the "system", which has now been accomplished was to make us ALL dependent, LIKE SLAVES, to the system.

Everyone of us who is dependent upon the 'system' for nearly everything in our lives, is no different than slaves working on a plantation for their "masters".

When I was a child, it was still possible to be off-the-grid, out-of-the-system. Esp. if you didn't live in a city or in America.

I watched as one-by-one, the freedoms we had were removed. Things that were free before, suddenly had price tags - like camping in nature. Used to be you could camp out in any National Forest campground for free. Not anymore. That's just one example, but indicative of how they've reduced us to Slaves to the System.

I am living in one of the last bastions of such freedom - Northern California, where ppl live off the grid, exchange goods and services and money via the green (cannabis) economy. It can't be escaped entirely, but effectively minimized interaction with the "system" is possible.

Surprisingly, many of the peace loving hippies I know here are suddenly buying guns, anticipating the worst scenarios. Can't blame them... Even thought about it myself!

Its a lonely world... I mean we used to have close neighbours - not good friends but friends plus he was like our dentist... :D Now i guess we're not young, well as young, so with our new neighbours being like in primary school and me in Yr 10 (grade 10?) we dont have anything in common so we have the pleasentries but not much else...

I think i would be heavily dependant on my parents if that happened.

    What is an internet war?

I'm tempted to say the you remind me of Chicken Litte and (The sky is falling). There is something to what you say about the overwhelming credit and dept that is owed by consumers as well as financial institutions, but the really big money that runs virtually everything has too much control to let things totally get out of hand. I think the worst we would see is a drastic stock market plunge and a prolonged recession.

That being said... as an ex-marine, I'm afirm believer in keeping some weapons in the house. I am also a diehard democrat and hate the republicans and the NRA.

Things must get worse in order to get better in this case. I do have a shred of faith in american humanity - that we will overcome by banding together and reshaping ourselves.
