There were a couple of songs that did it for me. I think the first one was The Eve of Destruction. The words really hit true to me but there was one thing that I believed - as fucked up as this world was, it wasn't the eve of destruction. I believed it could be The Eve of Love. The second song was Elusive Butterfly . If you are familiar with that song at all, I think the lyrics speak for themselves. I'm curious - did you listen to the lyrics as closely as I did? If you did, what song or songs made you realise that you were different than "the normal" person ? PAX

^^I'm with him. That's almost verbatim to what I was going to say. My first Phish concert in 2004 was the actual "ah hah" moment. That and the first time I heard Norman Greenbaum's Spirit In The Sky. lol
not sure if this was the defining song for me, there were a number..which i shall remember when i get the time to think.. but one that certainly made an impact on me, both lyrically and musically, was come away melinda, and i can't think which version it was originally, there have been a few that have recorded it.. uriah heep, come away melinda.. ~~ Daddy, daddy, come and look See what I have found A little ways away from here While digging in the ground Come away melinda Come in and close the door Its nothing, just a picture-book They had before the war Daddy, daddy, come and see Daddy, come and look Why, theres four or five Little melinda girls Inside my picture book Come away melinda Come in and close the door There were lots of little girls like you Before they had the war Oh daddy, daddy, come and see Daddy, hurry do Why, theres someone In a pretty dress Shes all grown up like you Wont you tell me why Come away melinda Come in and close the door That someone is your mummy You had before the war Daddy, daddy, tell me if you can Why cant things be The way they were Before the war began Come away melinda Come in and close the door The answer lies in yesterday Before they had the war~~ and you've just taken me back years with that bob lind song.. just played in on youtube, and every word came back into my head.. for those who may not know it, i hope you don't mind paxman if i put the lyrics here..but will have to be later bob lind, elusive butterfly..youtube.
help me by ten yars after really did something for me. I heard it the first time when my dad played it hwen he had an old friend over and I never have been quite the same. I really identified with that song for a long time. it is basically a ten minute long bluesrock jam freakout but lyrics never have been an issue for me anyway. another song that is special to me is almost cut my hair, because how often does it happen that you're about to throw away your ideals because of whatever happens around you? it keeps my spirit strong.
I think it would be nice to put the lyrics in like peaceful-lady did , if you can . ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY You might wake up some mornin' To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind And if you're quick enough to rise You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow Out on the new horizon You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings And if the sleep has left your ears You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow Don't be concerned, it will not harm you It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of Across my dreams with nets of wonder I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love You might have heard my footsteps Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind I might have even called your name As I ran searching after something to believe in You might have seen me runnin' Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind If you remember something there That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin' Don't be concerned, it will not harm you It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of Across my dreams with nets of wonder I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love Across my dreams with nets of wonder I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love The Eve Of Destruction The eastern world it is explodin', Violence flarin', bullets loadin', You're old enough to kill but not for votin', You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin', And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin', But you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say? Nn, Can't you feel the fears that I'm feeling today? If the button is pushed, there's no running away, There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave, Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy, And you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin', I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin', I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation, Handful of Senators don't pass legislation, And marches alone can't bring integration, When human respect is disintegratin', This whole crazy world is just too frustratin', And you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Think of all the hate there is in Red China! Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama! Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space, But when your return, it's the same old place, The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace, You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace, Hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace, And you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. mmm, no, no. you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. PAX

wel, i guess, it was not a special song or so..... growing up in Germany in the late 60s was not so easy, it was a little bit more difficult to get rock-records, and they were kinda expensive. What me as a 14 year kid draw to counter-culture,being a 14 year kid, hat was the anti-establishment-thing, behind of all that new sound, Hendrix of course made a big impression to me, movies like Easy Rider and so on, and there was still the war in Vietnam, i met some deserted soldiers in our local disco, one of them had a guitar, and he always played that Country Joe song " I feel like i'm fixing to die rag" By the way, i never had called myself a hippie, the others did,
I would have to say John Lennon's Imagine. I realized that war is not the answer, peace is, and I also don't believe in possessions, I believe that everything I have is everybody's, and I also don't believe in countries, geography for too many years has been keeping us from being one.
john denver songs , and some james taylor songs , i grew up w hippy music and and the fact that i am hippy in nature a lot of the songs i know are of that genration
