DC++ is usually used in a large LAN setting, such as a university. You can still find some cool and rare files on it. Basically, it works a lot like IRC, but designed specifically for downloading.

It depends on what I wanna get.
For non-rare music I use bearshare, for rare music I'll use emule if not on bear. For larger files such as movies and albums, I'll use bittorrent.

bittorent is a very interesting program, i belive it was writin in python, by bram cohen, Its interesting cause it is thought to be one of the best software inventions next to the browser itself, From my knowldge (but could be wrong) A tracker provides a file to a seeder. a seeder not only downlaods but uploads to lets say 3 people, 3 people upload to lets say "10kb/s" while downloading, each person uploads at lets say 5kb/s. the tracker, the seeder, and the peoples outgoing bite rate is added and used together for maximum performance. Fastest i seen so far was 170KB/s, anyway each bite recived is avalibe for uploading to others, the more people the more seeders, the more the bitrate, well atleast as fast as ur ISP provides you.
To activate bittorent, you resort to a tracker search engine, Check out www.torrentspy.com to learn more :)

You would totally benefit from it! Just the people uploading from you wouldn't benefit as much. :)

    www.ubernet.org

that's what I use. it's a members only set-up, but anyone can get on if they're willing to go through the required hoops (it'll take at least a few weeks, and they are strict!). the cool thing is it's organization, everything is tagged the exact same way and at the same quality, which is indiscernable from the original cd, unlike most mp3s.

Well, if your'e looking for 'brand new' type stuff(aka britney) I'd say just go buy the damn cd. Outside of that, I've found Azure... to be quite helpful and friendly to configure. Sometimes it's cool to share with com by making your own torrents as well.
