Well, I don't know exactly. As I have said in other threads, I was raised hardcore hippy. So, to rebel against my parent I would have had to join the Mormon Church or something.

I'll tell you one thing, though. I have tried to be normal, and I can't pull it off. Even if I put on normal clothes, it's as if people can sense that I'm a weirdo. And then I start talking and they confirm their suspicions, "Hey, yer not a redneck!"

    I can't help it. I couldn't change if I wanted to.

For me personally, and I realize that the definition of 'hippy' is wide open, but for me personally, hippies are people who are very aware of their values and why they have them. They're not people who do or believe things 'just because'. That's not good enough. That would drive a hippy crazy. A hippy has to question the dominant paradigm and the status quo. A hippy evaluates each value that they're handed and decides, "Do I agree?" And if they don't, they have the courage to reject it.

So, in my mind hippy has less to do with looks and more to do with frame of mind. I would much rather talk to thinking, intellectual radicals who don't look the part than to shallow people who do and mostly think about herb, you know?

I think that that's why we have a real variety of people on Hip Universe, because hippies do think for themselves, and they don't all reach the same conclusions. We're tolerant, though, so it works.

    So...that's a start...:)

    A Longwinded Hippy

other people label me a hippie, so i guess that's why...
other people labeled me a hippie in the past cause i had long hair, i wore the "hippie garb" i didn't dye my hair or wear make-up...i have since changed...am i still a hippie?
my name is jessie, although that's the name my parents gave me....i am me, whoever that is...label me what you want i don't care...i know who i am inside or at least i'm finding that out....
what makes a person a hippie? their clothes? their life choices? their values and beliefs?
all those things are passed down and around, what makes me me is everything anyone has ever been it's all inside me...everything i've ever know or seen...heard or spoken....

" Whats in a name? that which we call a rose,
By any other name would smell as sweet;"

names, lables, -isms, yada yada yada. we all know who we are inside (and if we're not sure yet, we'll find out soon enough)
i consider myself a hippie more than any other categorie because I love the music and the movies and the art and the fashion.....
but I dont dress like one. not completely. I listen to "skater" punk music, and sometimes I dress like that...sometimes I like to remind myself what it feels like to get dressed up in heels and dresses..and sometimes ill bum around in my bathing suit wth a tie dyed tank top and cutoff shorts and flip flops....
i guess what im trying to say is that my outward appearance can not be the dictating factor of who i am inside(its more of a reflection of my mood on that day)
so if anyone was to see me on the street at any given day....well, you probably wouldnt know what to call me

ithink everyone came pretty close tothe point.. and spoken in beautiful ways
ithink what makes you a hippy is what makes you you.. a unique individual.. a deep thinker who questions everything and weighs everything against the values of peace and love and beliefs that are completely unique tothe individual

the only thing i can say is..the abilityto think/behave/invission/understand non traditional concepts, thinkoutside the box of normal social conditioning and hope for a better more magivcal world

not sure that made any sence or ever reached a point

i hate the idea of corporate clones. i purposely do the opposite to everybody else because i dont want to be the same. i believe in being unique and individual and finding your own likes/dislikes/interests etc. n not basing your world around what other people think.
even if i wanted to dress the same as everybody else or be like everybody else, i couldnt. i wouldnt be able to pull it off (similar to Levi). i dont function like that. i have to make myself heard, i have to have my own ideas and my own values. i dont give a crap what other people think of me for that. i am who i am and they cant change me.

I think what makes me a hippy, if you want to call it that, is my ability to follow my heart. I've consistantly done what I love for most of my life; sometimes this sucks, sometimes I want to chuck it all away and do what everyone tells me to do, but at the end of the day, when I really think about it, I know that what I want more than acceptance and more than security is to be happy, and so that's what I go for. if that makes me a hippy, everyone should be a hippy, because everyone should be happy!

Since I started the post I guess I should say something. I'm a hippie cause I HATE MONEY! I feel guilty for owning a car and only drive the fucking thing when I have too!
I try to recycle everything one way or another,I'm way more comfey outside than in,don't wear anymore clothes than I have to,I don't buy anything without feeling guilty,I take great pride in my knowledge of edible plants and living off the land,I consider most of C,S,N,&Y "SO FAR", "religious music",Long to live a life in harmony with nature, cutting off the material world completely!

when i think of a hippie i usually think of someone who doesn't follow everyone else, and makes their own trail thru life and enjoys things natural and the way things were meant to be, i guess i see that embodied in myself and that's what makes me a hippie

i should meantion that i have also cut off most of my connections to pop-culture, i have no idea who most of the new bands are i hardly know what's going on with pop-culture, someone will ask "have you heard that new song by _____" and i have to laugh and say "i don't even know who that is yet alone what their new song sounds like"
