the purpose of this poll, if ur honest with yourself is to see why hippies r hippies, my question is not which of these do u do, but which one u do most in your life, what dominates your time, maybe even why u became or still r a hippy, what u think is the most important freedom that the counterculture brings u.
I am a hippie because i believe that there can be peace. The "flower power" generation didnt work, so what!? I listen to really groovy music. I love patchwork and plaid shit. "I believe the government is ran by insane people with insane obejectives and I am liable to be imprisoned as insane for expressing that." -John Lennon Most of all though, i am a hippie because i want to be!
All of the above. drug experimintation-----------I've done EVERYTHING sexual freedom----------------Is something I belive in strongly. political protest---------------I hate the gov'mnt, and would protest against it if I had the chance style of music--------------------60's/ 70's rock is ALL I listen to fashion,hair,jewelry---------------The ONLY way I dress is hippy
for me it's probably drug experimantation and the music. i don't need to protest my government much because i live in canada, and i believe what they're doing right now is the right thing. i don't dress hippy but i don't dress conformist. i have my own style that is seperate from others.
My disdain of the status qou. I have less hair now than when I started, but I have more repulsion of the powers that be than ever before. morrisgta, You don't need to protest your government? Let me tell you something. Canada now has a neocon infection. They caught it from us. Your future is going to be like ours if you don't stand up to it NOW. x
a hippy is not necessarily a person who deals with drug experimintation, sexual freedom, political protest, style of music or fashion... a hippy is just a person of unprejudiced judgements and uninterested love to everything and everyone. however, we have a limit, so we can't be true hippies anymore. however hard we try to make no prejudice to a person or thing in the world, there will be someone or something that makes you feel anger or hate to. only we can do is to be ourselves in our own way, that's what makes unique and distinct among humans.
trying to avoid deceiving myself, and the political opinions of the dominant culture labeling anyone who does as one. as far as i'm concerned that is the one and only central issue it has ever been about. the music of protest and not trying to dress so as to impress anybody both come from that, and the drug thing was introduced, like the term 'hippie' itself, to try and discredit that one central issue. dressing, or empairing one's judgement, to try and emulate what people try to imagine we were about, is, as far as i can see, just totally waaaaaaaay off the beam. the music of protest, which has always been close to the center of what we were about, is still a right on part of it though. other then political protest, none of the options in the poll have a damd thing to do with it. dreaming YOUR OWN dreams, not some national or economicly or idiologically motivated ones, thinking your own thoughts (clearly and objectively, not how someone else taught you to 'think'), and believing your own beliefs (again based on your own experiences and feelings) are what make us what we are. all the window dressing is just that. a whole load of crap that ain't got a damd thing to do with it! =^^= .../\...
i think it all can make someone classified as a hippie. but since you didnt make it so you could pick more then one thing, for me its political protest(then drugs, jewelery... and style of music i think in no way makes you anything)
we can only pick one option? If so, then all that drug experimenation is make you a druggie, but not the sole factor of being a hippie. Sexual freedom alone stands the potential of stereotyping as a slut. Political protests = Amnesty International employee. Taste in style, music, fashion, hair or jewelry = fashion designer, or inthereabouts. For me it's a combination of more the last four pretty much evenly. It's been a while since I've done drugs, so I don't think I'd qualify for the first attribute at all.
For me it's about living freely, and expressing your soul and your love for things without any restraint
what first attracted me to hippy culture was the love and acceptance I felt emanating from those folks. I was only 7 or 8 years old but it left a long-lasting impression on me though it took a few years to really take hold. I'm simply carrying on that same spirit that touched me when I was young.
Mostly the political protest. I love the music and freedom. As for the dress? Well whats dressing have to do with anything really?
for me its a lifestyle, way of though and life, not what you look like . all the other stuff comes because of the way think, (the music, political thoughts and so on.)
why does everything have to have a fuckin catchphrase stuck to it. when someone can define "hippy" then this thread wont seem so ridiculous. you didnt even offer "other" as a choice. do u truly believe that those choices are the criteria for "hippy" theres so much more than that. personally hippies, gangstas, skaters, nerds, yuppies, etc. dont truly exist there just words we use because its the closest form of expression we can come to portraying the actual experience of reality. i live a bohemian type lifestyle, i believe in sexual freedom and political activism and i experiment with psychadelic drugs yet i dont and never will refer to myself as anything but "me". where exactly is the line drawn between one stereotype and another. if someone wears baggy fubu jeans and a flower painted vest what are they a "gangsta" or a "hippy" wat if he speaks urban slang and listens to the grateful dead wtf is he. my personal philosophy is that i am a human being born on this earth and everyday im creating the epic story that is my life, my existence. the universe is infinite and is comprised of infinite variation. why try to focus on similarities and constantly group things together. the individual is so much more beautiful then any group's name could posibley do justice to. not to sound paradoxical but the stereotyping of hippies as political activist and sex freaks goes against the stereotypical image of hippies as open minded and contradictingly against stereotypes(its a brain tickler i know). the closest stereotype i can find that represent wat the "true" meaning of hippy is is the open mindedness. from the moment were born we are taught to live structured lives. we are put into schools that tell us its innapropriate to wear certain clothes or talk or think a certain way but wat makes it innapropriate the fact that for generations and centuries its been done the same way. so why not continue saying long hair is bad just b/c thats wat we were told by the generation before us. why not consider hippies tree hugging sex freak druggies, after all thats wat society has been saying since the sixties. this form of rigid bipolar thinking is wat causes a lot of the unrest in the world today. people try to make everything black or white its just not like that in fact i dont know if the black or the white exists its all just different shades of grey. people want things to be simple but life is not so. most of the ppl that call themselves a hippy are just trying to grasp the concept of "self" essentially they are unsure of who they are and wat exactly defines them as an individual. truly understanding urself is a complicated yet simple lifelong proccess that i dont belive we have enough time to complete. instead of looking at every characteristic that makes up me as a person from wat foods i like and personal philosophies to how i feel the moment i wake up they find some similarities with a certain social group and then define them selves by their standards. instead of leaving ur personality open ended they label themselves a "hippy" and start to live this lifestyle based on the lives of other ppl. this can provide some relief to some ppl b/c now they have a strong concept of themselves but this isnt neccessarily the truth and living like this can prevent u from experiencing a whole new world of self exploration. i personally belive that hipforums is a perfect example of this. i see so many confused teenagers saying they are "hippies" b/c of wat music they listen to or other ridiculous reasons and usually its all on the surface. many of the members that call themselves hippies are doing so for nothing more than fashion b/c they consider it the cool thing this week but there are no real beliefs and if their are they are only believed because some other "hippy" they looked up to said so. i know so many ppl that are infatuated with famous hippies like jim morrison, garcia, hendrix, lennon etc. and consider there word to be god. these are just mortal ppl like u and me just b/c they make music doesnt mean their superhuman it means they are naturally imperfect human beings experiencing one of the most beautiful and miraculous characteristics of humanity the ability to express oneself. this is not a superhuman act we all do it everyday. every word that comes from ur mouth is an expression of ur consciouss existence. ultimately the most important thing we have in life is our individuality why try to group yourself u might as well refer to urself as a number and tatoo it on ur arm. we are all one of a kind why not emphasize on that instead of categorizing and judging us by our affiliations. i also love that hippies are stereotypically non conformist as ridiculous as that sounds.this ideology is i believe larglely the product of the idiot box and its stranglehold on ppls minds. one of my best friends that use to make fun of me for listening to classic rock actually decided he wanted to live the hippy lifestyle after watching "the drug years" on mtv. b/c he was a friend i held back my resentment for this stupidity now he talks about "mind expansion" like he even knows wat the fuck that means. all this is is a feeble attempt to grasp on to something solid or structured ppl want the universe to be like a math problem with a definate answer 1+1=2 when in fact it is far more complex. wow. i apologize for the length and bad grammar and constant topic changing thers a lot more i want to say but then nobody will read a post that long
drug experimintation-----------I've done EVERYTHING sexual freedom----------------Is something I believe in strongly. political protest---------------I don't hate the government, I hate ppl who won't stand up and hold them accountable style of music--------------------floyd, zeppelin, black sabbath fashion,hair,jewelry---------------nah, none of that My most correct answer would have to political protest. I always am writing into the 'readers write' column bitching about something political
Being a "hippie" is not about any of the things in the poll, although some of them may be related to a certain lifestyle. I am often called a "hippie" by my closest friends because I don't care about having alot of stuff, as I have had and lost everything that a person could dream of. I have been called a "hippie" because I believe that most people, given the chance, will chose to do the right thing. I have been called a "hippie" because I choose to eat in a way that seems to be healthy for me to eat. I have been called a "hippie" because I believe in the message of people like Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and John Lennon and not in the message of people like GW Bush and Oral Roberts. I have been called a "hippie" because I believe that any 2 people can work out any problem if they will just sit down and listen to each other and show some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the other persons beliefs. See, being a "hippie" is something that I actually do not classify myself as; when it all comes down to it, I tell people that I am just Jeff and that I WILL live my life the way I believe to be right and good and just in my own eyes. This has been a 40 year process that has evolved and is still evolving. No music, lifestyle, clothing, intoxicant, or sexual act needed. In fact I am monogomous, wear Abercrombie, drink red wine, don't do any drugs at all and listen to classic Blues style music like Buddy Guy, BB King, and Robert Johnson. So based on your poll, I would not be a hippie at all.... Things that make you go Mmmmmmmmm.........:H
