so, what, in your opinion makes you a hippie? is it your personal style or musical taste? is it spiritual or phylosophical ideas? political or evironmental viewpoint? interest in drugs or disinterest in hygene? or a basically laid back attitude or zest for life? maybe you don't consider yourself a hippie. share some of your thoughts......i'm just curious
an expression of individuality in all that you have mentioned, with the added ability of being able to discuss anything with an open mind and finding interest in original creativeness. that's from my viewpoint.
Yeah, that. You don't HAVE to be vegetarian, you don't HAVE to be an enviromentalist, you don't HAVE to be into meditation or drugs. It's all about being yourself and being original and trying to decide what is the best way you can contribute to the world around you in a positive light. Weither that's picking up litter on the streets, helping a friend through a breakup, working in a hospital or adopting puppies from a shelter, it's how you choose to contribute positively to the world. Some people use drugs to produce fantastic music and literature (think any major hit on the radio from the 60s onward, or the works of most 19th century authors and poets). Some people design computer software for people who work at home so they can be with their children. Some people challenge the laws and rights of politicians and/or corporations when they think there is a better way to do something for the benefit of the world in general. Some people join religious groups to use their God/dess to help those around them. That is what I think a hippie is -- a person who makes a concious effort to be the best they can to help the world around them in a positive light. I don't wear tye-dye, I shower daily, I don't use drugs and I wear high heels and dye my hair. I believe I'm a hippie -- I work hard to harm no animal or person unless it is necessary (and no, that doesn't mean I have killed people for the benefit of humanity ). I'm a vegetarian, I recycle and compost, I work in an insurance firm, I wear second hand or handmade clothes, I buy fresh fruits and veggies so I don't have a lot of garbage or pricy packaging, I am frugal, I go barefoot as much as I possibly can. I think those are all qualities that make me a hippie. Of course, if you were at Woodstock (the original), enjoy the music of the 60s, wear dreads in your hair, walk barefoot, etc. you're automatically considered a hippie. But it's your choice as to weither you consider that a good or bad thing.
The correct hairstyle. Rich parents. A trust fund. Fishermans pants. Wool dreads. A feigned interest in the environment. An expensive small car or gas guzzling old van. A decent university education. Nonsensical mutterings about chakras and synergy. Ditto crystals. General arrogance to those who believe differently. Dog on a piece of string. etc. No, joking aside I agree with aphrodite pretty. Sadly many folk seem to feel it's about what I've listed above, that you couldn't possibly be a hippy if you don't have the proper clothes or an interest in capitalist gurus and yoghurt weaving. These are usually the same people that will then go and eat shitty packaged food from a large supermarket chain for convenience yet vilify you for not having a £75 handknitted nepalese cardigan on. It's not about image or the way you dress, it's about your actions and your impact on others. Keep it positive! I must admit though, I am guilty on several charges of fishermans pants wearing :s
beliving in ur ideas, not being afarid to stand for ur rights, loving yourself and others around u...like just being u! Its not so much about the drugs and the hair, its just like Wasteland said-a personal feeling!
I know alot of people who think they're hippies because they dress and act a certain way. No matter how you dress, or how you act or where you're from, I think the only thing that really makes you a hippie is having an open mind and an open heart. Not being judgemental about different people and their lifestyles and point of views. Doing what you can to express your love for your brothers and sisters (of all races) and for the earth, whether it's volunteering to help pick up litter on the beach or in a park like aphrodite_pretty said, or giving a little money to a homeless person or even help out in a soup kitchen sometimes. That's what makes a hippie, IMO. I don't see why some people think it's a bad thing to be a hippie. A hippie is all about love and peace and caring.
yeah man, its a like........a permanent gut feelin or somethin. Some things increase that feelin or certain positive and happy thoughts (yeah, you know) but even without it...you're just a cool person that 'keeps it real'....or somethin....
I was always considered a hippie when I was in school, probably because I loved going hiking, trippin' out and I wore bellbottoms. Nowadays I still dress kinda 70's but I think more like a hippie now. I'm learning about herbal remedies and I feel more in touch with nature when i'm hiking. My favorite music has always been stuff like pink floyd and jefferson airplane, oh yeah and now I have a '74 vw microbus to cruise in.
very nice, people! i think a hippie is someone who just decides to be human and live as a human in the world. somehow we end up together, young and old, wise and foolish, lazy and motivated, enlightened and lost to gather and dance and sing and look to the future and remember the past! to live in peace while the world is in turmoil for all to see us for who we are, hippies. lovin'ya'll!
i think a hippie is nonmatterialistic... if you are matter, then don't call yourself a hippie cuz then you aren't a hippie but a hippiecrit
also, hippies don't charge for love cuz they believe in free love which is why prostitutes don't like us cuz we give it away for free
