I was confronted by someone trying to explain how god gives them a feeling of joy and happiness that can only be experienced through faith and worship. As if the way i realize the universe subtracts from its beauty.

How are we not human beings in the exact same way? How is the universe you experience at all any different than mine?

I realize the explanation of a feeling cannot be transmitted, so i'l ask it like this.

Why do people think that way?

We have BILLIONS of people walking around, thinking that a different explanation changes what is actually happening.

what is better is to stop trying to pretend we know anything about it/them, and/or that it/they are under any obligation to resemble what any belief claims them to.

by the same token, that doesn't mean having to reject out of hand the very high probability of their being all sorts of neat fun invisible things, including sentient ones, including whatever happens to be most powerful among them, as well as those little more powerful then ourselves or even less.

but it does point up the absurdity of pretending there to be some sort of melodramatic conflict between the greatest and the only slightly less greatest among them.

or again, any of the beliefs, however popular or ancient people tend to claim in regard to them.

if we step away from that, from all that we think we know about it, it is actually possible to experience a very small hint of the actual positive caress and goodwill of the unseen.

prejudice against strangeness is truly a form of suicide of the spirit.
whether it is the chauvinism of an existing belief, or a well earned disgust at their apparent internal conflicts as presented by its more over the top enthusiasts.

The idea of beliefs can be referred to the shear existence of abstract thoughts revealed by the pure use of words in literature and textbooks about natural life in the world. They are to be believed in, but them is the past view like then. They are them for the further belief in passively passing time. Don't buy it? But why do we have to have clocks to bolster us in this unbalanced condition of being ready for the ideal idle chit-chat... any second now on the phone?

Lets take a moment to marvel at the beauty that is language.

Make - produce, create or manufacture
Sense: the physiological capacities within organisms that provide inputs for perception.

I didn't write that definition, nor did i create the symbols that allow them to be communicated, but they, as well as this explanation are very relevant to this rant.

If someone tells you that you aren't making any sense, at first glance their statement would be self contradictory, since the subject is a sense that has already been processed (in this case, they are symbols created by you, and arranged for the purpose of transmitting knowledge). But since the level of understanding between the two (or more) parties is relevant when attempting to transmit information, there is a standard subconsciously created by what is supposedly already understood.

When we apply this standard, we realize that the word "sense" in the phrase "Not making any sense" is representing the lack of information where information should be (again, I'm assuming you are attempting to transmit information).

If you were goading, here is my response.

What good is knowledge If it cannot be understood?

You didn't receive or impose sensation anyhow as the problem.

The soul was of concern to the virtuous Man. Thanks; anywho.

what is BEST, in ANY universe, is to not hurt each other and wipe our own, ah, clean up after our selves.

those are really the only two things i'd be entirely confident of calling virtuous.

well helping out each other is too. we might never have become human if we hadn't started doing that.

and it may be that other life forms taught us to.

nature gives me a feeling of joy and happiness that can only be experienced through, well, nature

[music can produce similar feelings in me, the creation of mankind]

god has never appeared nor spoken to me, but then again, i'm not schizophrenic

The point im making is that there is no difference between a universe with or without god. Since one or the other (god or no god) is what really is happening, we have to assume that everyone is capable of feeling the same thing, since we do all, in fact, live in the same universe.

The only thing that changes (or better yet, emits the illusion of change) are possibilities. And naturalism already considers that.

The only reason there is so much uncertainty and possibility in a universe WITH god, is because the idea isn't objective.

i was agreeing with you, and disagreeing with the person you were confronted with

but i don't agree that everyone is capable of feeling the same thing

simply because we don't feel the same thing

even though "we are all made in yahweh's image", i guess we are all made differently

no wonder religion confuses the holy hell out of me . . .

So this person experiences joy and happiness through God, which he/she only believes can be reached through faith and worship.

I personally experience joy and happiness through nature and communing with other souls (a universal god, of sorts), which I believe can be reached by...well, communing with nature and other souls.

Most people have veiled perceptions..they think the way they see things is the truth...religious people especially like to blame satan or various other elements for why those 6 billion other people on earth experience the same feelings in different ways.

I'm fine with the fact that other people reach happiness and joy through different channels than me. Other people are not always happy with the way I find joy and happiness.

I think it boils down to close-mindedness. I dont even waste my time talking about such matters with people like that. You can't ever convince them that there are a billion different ways to talk to God.

    Exactly.

The fact we don't feel the SAME thing goes without saying, because we have different bodies and whatnot. But we can agree what anger and love feels like or how things taste, because we have no reason to think the subjective qualities of the feelings are different. rather they are interpreted differently.

For example: I hate the taste of peanut butter and cant transmit why i don't like the taste because I don't know why i don't like it, i just don't.

This is hit out of the park by the fact that explaining why I don't like the taste of peanut butter would not explain the subjective reaction caused by eating it.

It always reduces to how its just the nature of the universe.
That things don't need explanations to be.

Gods existence usually requires this to be true, Its just a shame that this fact so often not understood.

I don't agree with how you said a lot of that, because the goal for me, and hopefully others here is understanding and education.

but I know exactly what you mean and couldn't agree more.

There's an obvious correlation between happiness levels and degree of detachment from reality. This is how drugs work, they disconnect your nervous system from the real world. Ignorance truly is bliss. It's irony at it's best, if you want TRUE happyness, create yourself a FALSE world to live in. Atheism is not as joyful a path.

I'm a miserable SOB, I'm also suffering daily agony from various health conditions. I jokingly told someone there must be a God because It's hard to believe natural selection could have resulted in such absolute misery, this much pain and suffering almost has to be premeditated.

But (a) is possessing property only subjective, and is it as much the true nature learned from school?; (b) is the knowledge of God after-all dispensed mercifully only to a handful of big-city slickers to be objectified by the wasting contracted out: those essentially referred to as Who You Know.

Daa..ah: Truly knowledgable people are untrusting or untrusted.

I say: Your the happy one because you don't waste with him amongst them with misled information.

Well it's all up to how the individual interprets their surroundings. Say you believe in the big bang theory, but your friend is into the electric universe theory then the interpretations of your universes are going to be completely different.

It could be argued that a connection with some kind of God provides an attachment to true reality, while denying any kind of higher power is creating a false world.

    or vice versa

it could also be argued that worrying about god or no-god is a waste of time, since clearly nothing good or bad comes from believing in either side

[religious and non-religious people each benefit and suffer in this world]

of course, if believing gives one peace of mind, so be it, but it should always be remembered that the belief may be in an imaginary thing

[i'll get my peace of mind elsewhere]

A lot of quantum physics theories actually support the presence of God. Not in the sense of a man upstairs with a grandfatherly beard pulling on us like puppets, but God nevertheless.
